Maintaining fitness doesn’t always require lengthy workout sessions. For those struggling to allocate time for conventional exercise routines, incorporating more movement into daily life can be an effective strategy to burn calories. Simple actions such as opting for stairs instead of elevators, walking during phone calls, or dancing to favorite tunes for 20 to 30 minutes can contribute to physical activity. Experts have shared alternative approaches that are manageable and enjoyable.
According to Lav Kumar Sharma, a senior personal trainer at Anytime Fitness, “Engaging in short bursts of various movements may not seem like exercise, but when performed regularly, they accumulate to significant benefits. The crucial aspect is to choose activities that you genuinely enjoy, ensuring that movement becomes a pleasurable part of your day rather than just another chore.”
It is important to note that before beginning any new fitness routine, individuals should consult with healthcare professionals for personalized advice.
Lt. Pratima Pandey, Director of Sports at Noida International University, along with Dr. Shivangi Borkar, Head of the Physiotherapy Department at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, recommended several enjoyable activities:
Dancing stands out as an excellent exercise option since it allows individuals to burn calories while enjoying their favorite music. Depending on the intensity, dancing can range from moderate to high aerobic activity, enhancing balance and coordination. Beginners can benefit significantly from just 20 to 30 minutes of dancing.
Engaging in sports such as cycling, swimming, badminton, and frisbee offers a fantastic alternative to lengthy gym sessions, delivering effective workouts while infusing fun into physical activity, thereby promoting consistency in exercise habits.
The aim should not be to meet specific targets rigidly. Enjoyable activities tend to be the most effective for weight loss. Pairing these activities with a balanced diet and adequate recovery time can lead to a sustainable fitness regimen and overall healthier lifestyle.
Swimming is a comprehensive workout that engages multiple muscle groups and elevates heart rates, while hiking on inclined or uneven ground also provides excellent exercise. Since these activities can be enjoyed as recreational outings, they allow for physical activity without the pressures of a structured workout.
Sports like badminton, soccer, pickleball, and basketball naturally involve continuous movement interspersed with short bursts of intensity, making them effective for staying active without the need to track repetitions or sets.
Deepti Sharma, a fitness expert and Director at MultiFit, emphasizes the importance of movement, stating, “While training is essential, it doesn’t always need to feel like a workout. By incorporating dance, sports, social activities, and new fitness experiences into our lives, we can keep the experience enjoyable and maintain an active lifestyle.”
Many individuals believe that weight management relies solely on workouts and determination. However, a significant factor that often goes unnoticed is Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT.
Dr. Shantanu Kumar De, a physiotherapist at Narayana Hospital in Howrah, explains, “NEAT encompasses the energy your body expends through daily movements—such as walking, standing, fidgeting, taking stairs, or completing household chores—essentially all activities excluding sleeping, eating, or structured workouts. While it may seem trivial, the impact is substantial.”
He further notes, “NEAT serves as a natural defense against weight gain during overeating phases and consistent low-level movement throughout the day promotes improved insulin sensitivity and more stable blood sugar levels.”
As a reminder, before starting any new fitness routine, it is advisable to seek guidance from a healthcare professional.
