Counter-terrorism officers in London have apprehended a man and a woman on the suspicion of aiding Iran’s foreign intelligence operations. The arrests took place on June 24, involving a 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, following searches conducted at locations in north and north-west London, as reported by the Metropolitan Police.
Additionally, a third property was searched in north-west London on September 9, subsequent to their arrests, as part of an investigation under the National Security Act (NSA).
The authorities clarified that this investigation is not connected to any attacks targeting buildings associated with Jewish or Iranian communities in London. Furthermore, it is not believed to be related to any activities tied to the Jewish high holy days.
Both individuals have been released on conditional bail, with a court date set for October.
Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads counter-terrorism policing in London, acknowledged that news of these arrests might raise concerns among the public. However, she emphasized that there is currently no perceived imminent threat to the general public regarding this situation.
She noted a significant increase in the intensity of their national security efforts over the past year, indicating that this investigation is part of that ongoing focus. Flanagan reassured the public that any activities posing a risk to the UK’s safety would prompt immediate action from law enforcement.
Moreover, she reminded citizens that the overall terrorism threat level remains at severe and urged them to remain vigilant. She encouraged anyone who notices suspicious behavior to trust their instincts and report such observations to the authorities.
