Mikel Arteta has shared his approach to preparing players for unexpected situations by introducing them to various challenges, such as postponing meal times before matches and increasing the temperature in the dressing room to enhance their adaptability.
This week, Arsenal experienced a significant delay of over five hours for their flight to Italy, where they were set to face Napoli in their Champions League opener. As a result, Arteta had to cancel his pre-match press conference, with the team arriving in Naples shortly before 10 PM local time. However, the setback did not hinder their performance, as they achieved their 13th consecutive victory in the league stage of Europe, thanks to a second-half goal from Martin Ødegaard.
Known for his creative strategies, Arteta has previously utilized unique training methods, including employing pickpockets during pre-season and simulating crowd noise in preparation for matches at Anfield. He elaborated on his philosophy of training players to handle disruptions. “I enjoy creating these challenges. I try to incorporate them during pre-season,” he stated. “When unexpected situations arise, we are already prepared. Whether it’s arriving late at the stadium or altering routines, I want my players and the staff to remain calm instead of panicking.”
Arteta emphasized the importance of adapting to unforeseen circumstances, saying, “If we find ourselves with extra time on the plane, we can utilize it to bond, relax, or even sleep. Complaining and making excuses is unproductive.”
When asked about other techniques he has implemented, Arteta mentioned, “We might delay meals, change travel routes, and even make the dressing room a bit more challenging by adjusting the temperature or reducing the number of massage beds. Our goal is to prepare for varying contexts and create optimal conditions, especially when stress or surprises arise on match day.”
Looking ahead, Arsenal is set to face Sunderland on Saturday night, aiming to maintain their perfect start to the season after last year’s 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. Leandro Trossard scored during that match, but a late equalizer from Brian Brobbey ensured a share of the points. Arteta reflected on the contrasting reactions of Trossard and Gabriel Jesus regarding their transfers. “Gabriel was not informed about his move and had to train separately before joining Barcelona,” Arteta noted, while Trossard had attended last week’s match against Chelsea after moving to Beşiktaş in July.
“I was quite surprised by the situation, particularly with Gabriel, as I had spoken to him individually and expressed gratitude towards each other,” Arteta remarked. “I understand that delivering unexpected news can be difficult, and sometimes someone has to take on the role of the ‘bad cop’.”
“What truly matters is how relationships evolve over the following months. When Trossard joins us in the dressing room, the camaraderie and connection with former teammates are crucial. I hope that remains intact,” he concluded.
