Jake Kolodjashnij, a defender who contributed to Geelong’s premiership success, has been forced into retirement due to concussion-related issues.
In 2024, Kolodjashnij signed a confidential waiver as part of his contract with Geelong, which required him to assume full legal responsibility for any potential brain injuries, allowing him to continue his playing career with the team.
Last month, the Geelong Football Club was penalized with a fine of $140,000 for not properly informing the AFL about this waiver concerning Kolodjashnij’s contract. This penalty included a $100,000 fine along with a suspended $40,000 sanction from the previous October, which resulted from an investigation into the club’s agreements with third parties.
Following revelations in early August about the club’s secret arrangement with a player known to have a history of concussions, Kolodjashnij publicly acknowledged that he was the player in question.
At 31 years of age, Kolodjashnij had participated in both the AFL and VFL earlier this season, but he did not play any matches after the concussion controversy came to light. He competed in 11 AFL games this season, bringing his overall career total to 209 games, which includes being part of the 2022 premiership-winning team.
In a statement, Kolodjashnij expressed his gratitude for the invaluable relationships and experiences he gained at the Geelong Football Club. “Football has played a crucial role in my life,” he remarked. “I consider myself fortunate to have shared this journey with close friends and to have enjoyed the successes we achieved together.”
Notably, Kolodjashnij’s twin brother, Kade, who played for Gold Coast and Melbourne, also retired due to concussion issues.
Andrew Mackie, Geelong’s football chief, lauded Kolodjashnij’s contributions, emphasizing that his impact on the team extended well beyond his performance on the field. “Jake earned immense respect through his dedication to the game, the support he provided to teammates, and his commitment to team objectives,” Mackie stated. “He was known as one of the league’s most dependable defenders, and both his coaches and teammates trusted him to fulfill any role required.”
Mackie further characterized Kolodjashnij’s career as one marked by consistency, resilience, and a selfless attitude, qualities that made him a cherished member of the Geelong Football Club. “His determination and professionalism throughout his career are what made him a valued teammate and individual within our organization,” he concluded.
