Fremantle Football Club has received a much-needed boost following their disappointing performance in the AFL grand final, announcing that their captain, Alex Pearce, will not require surgical intervention.

The club is optimistic that Pearce, a crucial player in their defense, will be back in training during the pre-season.

In the aftermath of their heartbreaking loss to Brisbane, Fremantle reported that Pearce sustained a partially torn Achilles tendon along with a calf injury. This occurred when he fell during the third quarter while pursuing the ball.

He was assisted off the field by two trainers, and one of the most poignant moments of the match was Pearce being seen on crutches, passing the premiership trophy during the post-match ceremony.

Brisbane’s head coach, Chris Fagan, and several players reached out with their well wishes to Pearce right after the game concluded.

Coach Justin Longmuir reflected on how Pearce’s absence impacted the team, particularly during Brisbane’s late-game resurgence. “Fortunately, Alex did not suffer a complete rupture of his Achilles tendon and will not need surgery,” stated Joe Brierty, Fremantle’s football manager, in an official announcement on Tuesday. “Scans have confirmed the injury is a partial tear of the Achilles tendon alongside a significant calf strain. We anticipate Alex will join pre-season training.”

On the same day, CEO Simon Garlick spoke out in defense of the controversial “Wharfie Time,” dismissing it as a reason for their loss. Following the final whistle, Fagan and some Brisbane players mentioned they had a strategy ready for the situation if “Wharfie Time” was enforced, aiming to leverage it to their benefit.

However, Garlick, along with Longmuir and Brierty, refuted claims that “Wharfie Time” played a detrimental role in the Dockers’ defeat. “We understand that teams, including ours, have plans for various game scenarios, whether ahead or behind in the closing minutes,” Garlick said during an interview. “Brisbane executed their strategy remarkably well on Saturday, and it’s evident they would have had this plan in place regardless of ‘Wharfie Time’.”

The future of “Wharfie Time” remains uncertain, with Garlick expressing, “Our supporters cherish ‘Wharfie Time.’ We just faced a heartbreaking grand final loss, and we are not about to discard the elements that define us. We will work through this.”
