This victory reinforces India’s strong tradition in this event, as the nation has claimed the women’s 4x400m relay gold in six of the last seven Asian Games. The win also highlighted an impressive day for Indian athletics, coming shortly after Neeru Dhanda’s groundbreaking triumph in trap shooting earlier that day.
Vithya Ramraj, who anchored the relay team, had already made waves at the Games by breaking PT Usha’s long-standing national record in the 400m hurdles. Her strong performance in the final leg was crucial in securing a comfortable lead against a competitive Bahraini team. Prachi, who had earlier won a bronze medal in the individual 400m event, along with Kiran and Poovamma, ensured that India maintained its lead throughout the early stages of the relay.
This gold medal elevates India’s total medal count at the Games to 51, which includes six gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 25 bronze medals.
