Israeli and Palestinian officials have reported that Izz al-Din Al-Beik, the leader of Hamas’ military wing in northern Gaza, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike. The attack also resulted in the death of one additional individual due to injuries sustained during the incident.

The Israeli Defense Forces have stated that throughout this month, they have eliminated at least 20 members of Hamas, including several senior commanders linked to the attacks on October 7, 2023.

According to reports, the airstrike targeted Al-Beik, who Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz accused of orchestrating assaults and enlisting militants. Hamas has confirmed Al-Beik’s death through an official statement. The airstrike occurred early in the morning, striking an apartment complex in the Nasr neighborhood of Gaza City.

Health officials noted that another individual succumbed to their injuries following the attack. Amid concerns that Hamas is rearming and resuming assaults in breach of an October ceasefire agreement, Israel has intensified its military operations against the group in recent weeks.

The Israeli military claims to have killed numerous Hamas operatives this month, identifying some as senior leaders involved in the October 7 attacks or those who participated in holding Israeli hostages. In contrast, Hamas has denied any efforts to carry out new attacks or rebuild its military capabilities, accusing Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire.

A ceasefire brokered by the United States last year aimed to facilitate the reconstruction of Gaza; however, progress has stalled largely due to disagreements over conditions for disarmament by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

Since the ceasefire was established, Palestinian health officials report that at least 1,400 individuals have been killed in Gaza, while the Israeli military has confirmed the deaths of four Israeli soldiers. Palestinian authorities claim that over 73,000 people have died as a result of the ongoing Israeli operations in Gaza, which were initiated following the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals in southern Israel due to attacks by Hamas-led fighters in October 2023.
