Carlo Ancelotti addressed a forum in Brisbane last night, where the experienced Italian coach tackled the substantial criticism directed at Brazil’s recent performance. He appeared unfazed by the backlash.

“It’s beneficial to receive feedback on our work,” Ancelotti remarked. “Criticism has always been present and will continue to be. It does not alter my vision for the future of this national team. It has no bearing on my outlook.”

In terms of team selection, Ancelotti has opted for a mostly experimental lineup, featuring 17 players with ten or fewer international caps and ten players yet to make their senior debut.

Ancelotti is noted for being the only coach to have claimed titles in all five of Europe’s major leagues and for holding the record with five Champions League victories. He remains optimistic despite the team’s lackluster performance in a friendly match.

He hinted at potential changes for the upcoming match, emphasizing his desire to better understand his players to make informed decisions for future competitions. “I want to avoid making mistakes,” he added.

The criticism following the 1-1 draw in Townsville was not limited to Brazilian media. With Ancelotti’s close association with Real Madrid, Spanish publications are keenly observing his progress, particularly as Barcelona has had a strong start to the La Liga season. The newspaper Marca noted that Ancelotti has significant work ahead to enhance Brazil’s performance, citing a lack of creativity and tactical coherence within the team. Another outlet, AS, suggested that while Ancelotti averted a “disaster,” Brazil’s traditional style of play has diminished and requires reimagining.

Brazilian media, including Globo, utilized a rating system for player performances, which revealed poor assessments. Notably, Viní Jr. received a low public score of 1.7, while Globo rated him at 5.0, highlighting his errors and minimal contributions. Ancelotti himself garnered a public score of just 1.4 and a 4.5 from Globo, with the latter criticizing his 4-2-4 formation as ineffective. In contrast, striker Rayan, who scored the equalizer, received a public score of 6.6 and a 7.0 from Globo, making him one of the few players rated above 5.0.

Other noteworthy public ratings included a 2.3 for goalkeeper Ederson and 2.5 for the “below average” performances of several players. Globo’s reporter Cahê Mota remarked that Brazil repeated many of the mistakes that led to their disappointing World Cup performance, leaving lingering questions as they embark on this new cycle leading up to the 2030 tournament. He pointed out that gaps in midfield continue to be a glaring weakness, with players like Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães struggling both in possession and defensively against Australia’s attacks.

As Brazil prepares for their next match, Ancelotti remains committed to utilizing these friendlies as opportunities for testing strategies and player capabilities. “Fans need to exercise patience,” he advised, indicating that the team will be ready for official competitions when the time arrives. “We had chances to take the lead; we simply lacked precision in the final moments. The team showed resilience and fought until the end.”

While expectations for Brazil’s resurgence are high, Australian striker Tete Yengi believes that the Socceroos can elevate their performance as well. “They possess that winning mentality and determination, and they will raise their game again,” Yengi stated. “We need to be prepared to match that intensity, and we believe we can improve too.”

It’s worth noting that Yengi’s starting position in Townsville was due to an injury to a teammate, adding an interesting dynamic to the upcoming match.
