Marks & Spencer has entered into a partnership with Sephora to establish beauty sections within its retail locations, aiming to draw in a younger demographic of shoppers.

The French beauty giant plans to set up dedicated areas, staffed by Sephora personnel, in 100 M&S stores and will also offer its products on the British retailer’s website starting in the spring of next year.

Sephora made a notable return to the UK market in 2023, garnering significant attention and currently operates around 18 standalone stores across the country. The brand is a subsidiary of LVMH, a luxury goods conglomerate headed by Bernard Arnault, who, along with his family, ranks among the wealthiest individuals globally with a reported fortune of $171 billion (£129 billion), as per Forbes.

Following its initial unsuccessful attempt to penetrate the UK market in 2005, which resulted in the closure of several locations, Sephora has swiftly expanded in its second endeavor. This collaboration with M&S signifies a strategic shift in its growth approach.

Experts have noted that Sephora’s engagement with emerging brands and partnerships with prominent influencers on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has effectively attracted its target audience of women aged 24 to 36 years.

John Lyttle, managing director of M&S’s fashion, home, and beauty division, commented, “Beauty represents a significant segment for M&S, with the potential to draw in new customers and encourage existing ones to shop more frequently with us.”

He further added, “By integrating Sephora’s specialized knowledge with the M&S brand’s strength, store presence, and evolving digital platform, we aim to enhance our offerings. Additionally, we will persist in investing in our own beauty categories where we have established credibility and consumer trust.”

As many department stores have shuttered in recent years, retailers are competing fiercely for a share of the beauty market. The UK has seen the closure of numerous department stores, including Debenhams, Beales, and a significant portion of the House of Fraser chain.

Sephora’s self-service model, which enables customers to explore and test products independently, is particularly appealing to younger consumers, who may prefer to test items in-store before making online purchases. This partnership is expected to intensify competition with health and beauty retailers such as Boots and Superdrug.

Lyttle mentioned that this agreement forms part of M&S’s broader transformation strategy, which includes a £700 million investment aimed at revitalizing stores, modernizing supply chains, enhancing distribution systems, and improving product quality.

The organization, which employs over 65,000 individuals, operates 227 full-line stores that include food, clothing, home goods, and beauty sections. After closing numerous outdated outlets, more store closures are anticipated in the next two years, although a few new locations are set to open, targeting a total of 200 full-line stores in the UK.

M&S’s food division is on a rapid growth trajectory, with 18 food-only stores slated to open this year, aiming for a total of 420 locations, compared to the current 335 directly managed outlets. Additionally, franchise partners oversee another 466 stores in the UK and further abroad.

Sarah Boyd, managing director of Sephora UK, stated, “Together, we can transform the high street beauty experience for customers throughout the UK, delivering the finest curated brands and a superior beauty experience in M&S stores.”

She added that the introduction of beauty advisors in M&S locations will facilitate a more personalized shopping experience, enabling the brand to engage with customers in the communities where they live, shop, and spend their time.
