Mohit Sharma, a former Indian fast bowler, is poised to become the new bowling coach for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as the franchise continues to revamp its support staff. Following Zaheer Khan’s appointment as head coach, it was anticipated that adjustments to the coaching team would occur, with the management granting him the authority to select his own personnel.
Mohit, who has previously played for CSK, is the first addition to Zaheer’s coaching framework. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed, “Zaheer is assembling his own support staff and has identified Mohit for the position of bowling coach.”
He will take over the role from Eric Simons, who has been part of the coaching team under Stephen Fleming. Although many initially thought Zaheer would manage the bowling himself, given his expertise, it appears he has advocated for a dedicated bowling coach due to the broader responsibilities he has assumed. The 38-year-old Mohit was part of CSK during its formative years and had a brief tenure with the Indian national team.
In terms of additional staff, sources from The Indian Express indicate that Zaheer is in discussions with potential candidates, including one expected to join from abroad. The batting coach position may also remain occupied by an international expert, as Zaheer is exploring various options.
Moreover, Zaheer will have the discretion to select his own physiotherapists and trainers. There is a general expectation within the franchise that assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar will retain their positions for the upcoming season.
Last week, CSK announced Zaheer’s new role as head coach, succeeding Fleming, who had been with the team since 2009. After three consecutive seasons without playoff qualification, CSK and Fleming mutually agreed to part ways following the conclusion of the MLC in July. Zaheer is anticipated to travel soon to finalize his coaching staff and is likely to visit Chennai towards the end of October to confirm player retentions.
Currently, the franchise is not engaged in any trade discussions with other teams. Reports regarding a potential transfer of Hardik Pandya to CSK have been dismissed, with the franchise not actively pursuing the player.
