Residents of the village of Whelford in the Cotswolds received notification yesterday that they could return to their homes after being advised to evacuate temporarily to a nearby leisure center.

Approximately 85 households were evacuated early Sunday morning as a precautionary measure following a significant police operation near RAF Fairford.

One resident shared with the BBC that while many have returned, some remain reluctant. “I haven’t gone home because I want to wait until I know more about what actually happened; it all feels very suspicious to me,” the individual stated, adding that police have instructed residents to refrain from taking photographs and to remain indoors.

A security perimeter continues to be enforced around three vans being investigated by counter-terrorism authorities close to RAF Fairford, two days following the incident.

Local officials, including an MP and council members representing the area, have expressed doubts regarding the security measures taken in response to perceived threats from Iran.

Roz Savage, the Member of Parliament for South Cotswolds, expressed her concerns about the circumstances surrounding the alleged plot. She plans to address her inquiries to both the Prime Minister and the Defence Secretary. “Since it was announced six months ago that RAF Fairford would serve as a base for U.S. military airstrikes on Iran, I have been asking the government to assure my constituents of their safety,” she remarked. “Although they provided that assurance, the events of this past weekend raise questions about its validity.”

She added, “What information was known, when was it known, and what could have been done to enhance the safety of my constituents?”

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the timeline of information dissemination. A local farmer revealed that she contacted the police early Sunday morning to report suspicious activity, prompting a swift police response.

In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated in a press briefing that the individuals involved were under surveillance.

Tristan Wilkinson, a cabinet member for the Cotswold District Council and representative for the Lechlade, Kempsford, and Fairford South ward, expressed disbelief over the notion that individuals under surveillance could approach the base without intervention. “If the American president’s statement is accurate, I’m having trouble understanding how they could get so close to the base and drive what were believed to be explosives into a residential area,” he stated.

Iran has previously declared any base utilized for attacks against its territory as a legitimate target. However, the Iranian embassy in London has vehemently denied any connection to the arrests of the five suspects near RAF Fairford.

Dan Sabbagh, the Guardian’s defense and security editor, examined the potential Iranian link to the alleged plot. He noted that RAF Fairford serves as a primary base for U.S. Air Force bombers in Europe and has played a role in U.S. operations against Iran. Following the former Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s approval for military action against Iranian missile sites, the base has attracted significant interest from Iranian authorities.

In a statement issued on July 23, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared that any U.S. base, including Fairford, used for assaults on Iran would be viewed as a legitimate target.

The current geopolitical climate has seen Iran increasing its focus on Western targets, particularly following escalated conflicts in the Middle East. The five men arrested in connection with the suspected plot at RAF Fairford have been released on bail while investigations continue into their proximity to the airbase and the contents of the vans.

Sources suggest that the decision to release the suspects indicates investigators do not believe they were poised to execute a mass casualty attack. The investigation into a potential Iranian connection and whether any of the suspects were compensated for gathering in Whelford, located two miles from RAF Fairford, is ongoing.
