Experiencing a suspected heart attack can be an alarming situation, especially if you are alone at home. The initial moments are crucial, and attempting to self-diagnose can lead to a delay in receiving necessary medical attention.

According to Dr. Parin Sangoi, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Wockhardt Hospitals in Mumbai Central, it is imperative to act quickly. “Do not wait for your symptoms to intensify. Contact emergency medical services right away,” he advises.

If you find yourself alone and suspect you may be having a heart attack, here are the steps you should take:

Do not hesitate to seek help if you feel unwell. Symptoms of a heart attack may manifest as a sense of pressure or tightness in the chest, but they can also include shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, dizziness, or discomfort radiating to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw, as noted by Dr. Sangoi.

If you notice any of these signs, immediately call your local emergency medical service. “Timely treatment of a blocked artery can preserve more heart muscle,” he explains.

After contacting emergency services, find a secure place to sit and refrain from moving unnecessarily. Dr. Sangoi suggests keeping your phone nearby and, if it’s safe to do so, unlocking your door to facilitate quick access for emergency responders.

“Do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital. While waiting for help, it’s better to remain seated and rest,” he advises.

If you have been prescribed medication for angina, such as nitroglycerin, use it only as directed by your healthcare provider. “Always prioritize calling for help over taking medication,” Dr. Sangoi emphasizes.

The focus should be on obtaining professional medical assistance as swiftly as possible, rather than trying to handle a potential heart attack on your own.

While aspirin may be beneficial in the event of a suspected heart attack, it is not suitable for everyone. Dr. Sangoi recommends following the advice of an emergency operator or physician regarding aspirin, provided you do not have any known allergies or contraindications.

The primary goal is to secure medical attention promptly, rather than attempting to manage the situation at home.

One common misconception is to delay seeking help because you believe the discomfort is related to gas, acidity, or anxiety. “The most perilous mistake is to assume that discomfort is due to something benign and wait for it to subside,” warns Dr. Sangoi. Symptoms can differ widely among individuals, making it unreliable to self-diagnose.

If you are alone and experiencing potential heart attack symptoms, Dr. Sangoi advises against:

  • Driving yourself to the hospital
  • Walking or exercising
  • Taking multiple medications without guidance
  • Using home remedies for symptom relief
  • Searching the internet to confirm if it is a heart attack
  • Waiting for symptoms to worsen before seeking assistance

“You cannot accurately assess your situation at home,” Dr. Sangoi cautions.

In cases where you become unresponsive or have difficulty breathing, CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), if available, may be necessary, he adds.

Notably, the term ‘heart attack’ has seen a surge in searches on Google over the past day.
