Authorities have discovered the remains of two men, aged 79 and 59, at a property located near Grafton, with their bodies found two weeks apart.
Investigators are exploring the possibility of foul play related to these incidents.
A 32-year-old individual has been apprehended at Grafton Base Hospital as the inquiry progresses.
Law enforcement officials are treating the deaths of the two men, found on the same northern New South Wales property, as suspicious. The first body, that of a 79-year-old man, was discovered on September 13 inside a residence on Summerland Way in Gurranang, situated approximately 25 kilometers north of Grafton.
On the following day, police returned to the property as part of their ongoing investigation and located the second body, that of a 59-year-old man.
Superintendent Joanne Schultz remarked, “They were not expecting to find what they did.”
The case has been handed over to the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, which has initiated Strike Force Faneel to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
On the current day, detectives arrested the 32-year-old man at the hospital. Authorities believe he had been residing in Gurranang.
At this time, no formal charges have been filed against him.
“There is substantial work ahead to determine the exact nature of these events, but the injuries observed are indicative of foul play,” Superintendent Schultz added.
New South Wales Police confirmed that the two deceased individuals were acquainted with one another.
According to Superintendent Schultz, “The 59-year-old was not a resident of Gurranang; he was visiting the property, and it appears he passed away within the last 24 to 48 hours.” She noted that the relationship between the 32-year-old and the deceased is still under investigation.
The property in question has been designated as a crime scene, and detectives are expected to remain on-site for several days.
Superintendent Schultz characterized the crime scene as “confronting” for the responding officers. “No one enjoys responding to such situations,” she stated, emphasizing the trauma involved for those who arrived at the scene unexpectedly to find the 59-year-old deceased.
The investigation is actively ongoing.
Authorities confirmed that the 32-year-old man was undergoing medical treatment at the time of his arrest and has since been taken to Grafton police station, where he remains in custody.
Superintendent Schultz noted that the crime scene had not been preserved prior to the discovery of the second body, indicating that the investigation would be extensive given the circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
