Recent developments, including a tragic case involving a deceased child sex offender and the ongoing war in Iran, appear to be contributing to a decline in support for Donald Trump among his most ardent followers. His approval ratings have reached new lows, prompting some of his staunchest advocates to reconsider their allegiance.

One notable example is Trisha Hope, a former enthusiastic member of the Front Row Joes, a dedicated group of Trump supporters known for attending his rallies nationwide. This group is easily recognizable by their custom T-shirts and branded caps, and they have even caught the president’s attention on several occasions. Hope was a vocal supporter during Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, spending weeks in Washington, D.C., advocating for him. However, she recently expressed a shift in her perspective, stating in a Politico interview, “If we do lose the midterms and [Trump] is impeached again, I will be walking the halls of Congress in support of that impeachment.”

Hope attributes her change of heart to the Iran conflict and revelations from the Epstein case. This sentiment is echoed by Rick Frazier, another former member of the Front Row Joes, who shared his concerns about the implications of Trump’s actions and the military-industrial complex.

Beyond these individual voices, influential figures are also distancing themselves from Trump. Podcaster Joe Rogan, who previously endorsed Trump for the 2024 election, has recently criticized his supporters, calling them “nuts” on his podcast. Rogan acknowledged his past support for Trump but noted the disappointment regarding the president’s failure to fulfill promises to “drain the swamp.”

While it may be gratifying to see some supporters recognize Trump’s self-serving nature, his status as a “lame duck” raises questions about the significance of these shifts in public opinion. Nonetheless, the growing dissatisfaction with Trump could have serious implications for the upcoming midterm elections. Many voters have taken his advice to “pretend I’m on the ballot” to heart, with a recent PBS News/NPR/Marist poll indicating that 45% of voters are motivated primarily by a desire to vote against Trump. This trend may facilitate a Democratic resurgence in both the Senate and the House.

Trump’s usual tactics and bold promises are failing to resonate as they once did. Recently, he proposed a $5,000 “Trump dividend” contingent on Republican control of Congress post-midterms, but only 13% of voters found this credible according to a poll.

Despite any concerns he may have about the midterms or the risk of a third impeachment should Democrats succeed, Trump is maintaining a facade of confidence. However, broader Republican anxieties about the future are evident, especially regarding potential consequences if a second Trump administration were to materialize. Katie Miller, spouse of Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller, expressed on Twitter her fears of facing similar partisan investigations as before.

There is a growing hope that accountability will be pursued, ensuring that Trump and his associates face the repercussions of their actions. As individuals begin to step away from the MAGA movement, their frustration is directed not only at Trump but also at the larger systems that allow powerful figures to evade responsibility. For meaningful change to occur and to prevent another leader like Trump from rising, there must be a thorough examination of these underlying structures. The call for higher legal costs for MAGA supporters resonates strongly in this context.
