Washington — On Monday evening, two aviators from the U.S. Navy ejected from their aircraft while attempting to land on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier situated off the coast of Virginia. This incident, which the Navy referred to as a “mishap,” resulted in injuries to four sailors on board the ship.

The aviators, part of Carrier Air Wing 3, ejected successfully after an incident occurred during the recovery of their aircraft. They were quickly rescued by search and rescue teams, according to a brief statement from the Navy.

After their rescue, both pilots were returned to the carrier where they underwent evaluation by medical staff. Additionally, four sailors aboard the vessel received medical attention; one of them was taken to a hospital in the Norfolk, Virginia, area for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Navy did not disclose the specific model of the two-seat aircraft involved in the incident, nor did it provide information on the aircraft’s condition or the potential causes of the mishap. Requests for additional information from the Navy went unanswered.

The Navy emphasized that carrier crews routinely train for emergencies and unanticipated situations during flight operations, a protocol that allowed the crew to respond swiftly and safely in this instance.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier, has been in active service since its commissioning in 1977.
