Aymen AL Othmani, a weight-loss coach based in Dubai, recently shared on Instagram the remarkable story of a woman who achieved a weight reduction of 43 kg within eight months. Her journey is particularly noteworthy as she lost approximately 10 kg in the first month alone. While this impressive statistic has gained significant attention online, it prompts an essential inquiry: Is it actually feasible and safe to lose 10 kg in just one month?

According to consultant dietitian Garima Goyal, the answer is affirmative. “For some individuals, especially those starting at a higher body weight, a weight drop of 10 kg in the first month is achievable, but it doesn’t imply that the entire loss is pure body fat,” she explained.

It is important to note that during the early stages of a significant dietary change, individuals often experience a notable loss of water weight and glycogen. Goyal elaborated, stating, “Glycogen, which is the stored form of carbohydrates in the body, is accompanied by water. When there is a considerable reduction in calorie and carbohydrate intake, glycogen stores diminish, leading to a swift decrease in body weight. Additionally, alterations in salt consumption and food volume can also cause a significant weight drop during the initial weeks.”

The woman’s total weight loss of 43 kg over eight months underscores the variability in weight-loss rates, which can depend greatly on factors such as starting weight, body composition, health status, dietary habits, physical activity, and the level of professional guidance received. “Individuals who begin their journey at a significantly higher weight may see quicker initial losses compared to those with less weight to shed,” Goyal noted.

From a clinical nutrition standpoint, the issue with rapid weight loss extends beyond mere numbers. Goyal pointed out, “Aggressive weight reduction can lead to muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, and challenges in maintaining the results. A well-structured weight-loss program should prioritize muscle preservation through adequate protein intake and suitable resistance training while avoiding extreme calorie deficits.”

Moreover, Goyal emphasized that weight loss is seldom a straightforward process. “The initial month may show a significant decrease, but this is often followed by slower progress or plateaus, which is entirely normal. As weight decreases, the body’s energy needs also adjust, making continued weight loss more gradual,” she explained.

The transformation highlighted by the coach can certainly serve as a source of motivation, but it should not set a standard for everyone. Goyal cautioned, “Attempting to replicate someone else’s initial 10-kg loss may lead individuals toward crash diets and unhealthy restrictions. The safest and most sustainable rate of weight loss varies for each person.”

It is advisable for anyone considering a weight-loss regimen to consult with a healthcare provider before embarking on any new dietary or exercise program.
