On Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the co-pilot involved in the assault on Indian pilot Smit Machchhar during a flydubai flight to Tel Aviv appeared to have undergone Islamist radicalization and might have been experiencing suicidal thoughts. However, he emphasized that investigators had not yet drawn any definitive conclusions regarding the attack or its motives, as reported by Reuters.

The incident involving flydubai flight FZ1073 occurred on Wednesday when the aircraft was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Reports indicate that the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar in the cockpit while flying over Saudi Arabia. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, which allowed passengers and crew to intervene and subdue the attacker. A reserve crew member onboard then assumed control of the aircraft, successfully landing it in Tabuk, located in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

There were 174 individuals aboard the flight, and during the attack, the Boeing 737 reportedly descended over 14,000 feet in less than half a minute, according to flight-tracking data cited by Reuters.

Netanyahu mentioned that the co-pilot, identified as an Omani national whose name has not been released, is under investigation for possible ties to extremist activity. Although initial assessments suggest that he acted alone, the investigation continues, with authorities exploring various potential motives, including terrorist intent or mental health issues. No evidence implicating Iranian involvement has been found thus far.

The Prime Minister remarked, “We know that he underwent Islamist radical indoctrination,” during an interview with Fox News, highlighting that this conclusion stemmed from details surrounding the co-pilot’s personal background. He added that it seemed the co-pilot’s actions could have been driven by suicidal inclinations, suggesting he aimed to bring down the aircraft.

Netanyahu was careful to note that these insights are preliminary, stating, “I don’t make final conclusions yet. But that’s the indications we have now.” As investigations are being conducted in multiple countries, the United Arab Emirates has also launched its inquiry into the incident, focusing on whether it was linked to terrorist activities or involved prior planning.

Following the emergency landing, Machchhar was treated for serious injuries before being airlifted to the UAE, where he was visited by Indian diplomatic representatives. Meanwhile, Israeli officials are collaborating with Saudi authorities on the investigation, and while the attacker remains under scrutiny, Omani officials have not provided any comments regarding the situation.

Netanyahu expressed that it is still early to ascertain any connection between the co-pilot and Iran, asserting, “We’ll get to the root of this attacker, whether he had accomplices, whether Iran was behind it. I think we’ll find out very soon.” However, other Israeli security sources confirmed that no links to Iran have been identified thus far.

In summary, while the investigation is ongoing and various scenarios are being considered, including potential terrorism or psychological issues, the full circumstances surrounding the attack remain under examination. Machchhar’s survival after the harrowing cockpit assault serves as a testament to the resilience of both crew and passengers during a terrifying ordeal.
