The Indian cricket team is set to commence its 2027 ICC World Cup journey against the reigning champions, Australia, on October 7 in Cape Town. This match will mark the beginning of the group stage for the tournament.
Prior to the group stage, which features 12 competing teams, a Super Series will take place from October 2 in Windhoek, Namibia. This preliminary round will involve the three lowest-ranked teams that qualified for the World Cup.
According to reports from The Indian Express, the Indian squad plans to arrive in South Africa well ahead of the tournament. They will engage in a six-match ODI series against the South African team at prominent venues, including Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Centurion.

With just a year remaining until the next 50-over World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) released the tournament schedule on Thursday, confirming that the event will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This marks the return of the World Cup to Africa, following its inaugural hosting in 2003. Namibia will be a first-time host, while Zimbabwe will have cities like Harare, Bulawayo, and Victoria Falls as its venues. South Africa is expected to serve as the main host, utilizing eight venues across the country for this premier cricket event.
ICC Chair Jay Shah expressed excitement about the tournament, stating that the collaboration between South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will provide an exceptional experience for teams and fans alike, highlighting the rich cricket culture and hospitality of the region.
The tournament will introduce a new Super 7 phase, where the top three teams from each group, along with the best fourth-placed team, will advance. Unlike the previous Super 6 format, teams will not carry forward their group stage points into the Super 7.
The Super 7 stage will run from October 25 to November 14, with each team competing in six matches. India, being the top-ranked team in the ODI format, is designated as A1 in the seedings, followed by Australia (A2), Pakistan (A3), England (AB4), New Zealand (B1), South Africa (B2), and Sri Lanka (B3).
If India successfully navigates through the group stage, they may potentially face Australia again in Victoria Falls, followed by matches against South Africa at the Wanderers, New Zealand in Paarl, and Pakistan in Cape Town on November 7. They will also encounter the 2015 champions, England, in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), before concluding the Super 7 phase against Sri Lanka in Durban on November 14.
The top four teams from the Super 7 will progress to the semifinals, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
Group A participants include India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and Qualifier A. Group B includes South Africa, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Qualifier B.
India’s group stage matches are as follows: October 7 against Australia in Cape Town, October 10 against Pakistan in Johannesburg, October 14 against Afghanistan in Centurion, October 17 against Qualifier A in Bloemfontein, and October 24 against Zimbabwe in Victoria Falls.
