An independent investigation into Travelodge, prompted by a serious sexual assault incident, has revealed ongoing risks to guests, with nearly 10% of its hotels reporting room intrusions this summer.

The critical findings were detailed in a 70-page report released on Thursday. This review was initiated earlier in the year following the conviction of a man for a severe sexual assault against a Travelodge guest in Maidenhead in 2022.

The assailant received a copy of the victim’s room key by misrepresenting himself as her boyfriend and subsequently assaulted her in her hotel room. The victim, referred to as “Lily” in the report, later received what she deemed an “insulting” £30 refund for the ordeal.

This incident raised alarms about security shortcomings within the hotel chain, ultimately resulting in the resignation of Joanna Boydell, the chief executive, in August.

Paul Greaney KC, the barrister overseeing the review, stated that Lily was treated in a manner that was “inappropriate and unfair; indeed, it was disgraceful.” He criticized the hotel’s approach to her complaint, describing it as motivated by a desire to resolve the issue swiftly and inexpensively.

The report criticized Travelodge’s handling of Lily’s written complaint, asserting it fell short of the public’s expectations for such an organization, calling the response “simply appalling.”

It went on to indicate that the serious failings identified were primarily the responsibility of the organization as a whole, rather than any individual staff member.

Greaney acknowledged that Travelodge had made attempts to enhance its room security measures and staff training since March. However, he emphasized that the steps taken thus far were insufficient to guarantee guest safety.

Despite improvements to the hotel’s key security policies, the review found that these measures were not consistently enforced across locations. “Even during this period of intended improvement, there were reports of room intrusions at nearly 10% of Travelodge hotels, which amounts to around 60 establishments,” the report stated.

Greaney expressed concern that adequate measures had not yet been implemented to ensure guest safety during their stays at Travelodge hotels.

While the investigation concentrated on the issues within the budget hotel chain, Greaney noted that guests across the country were experiencing unacceptable security breaches, indicating that room intrusions were a widespread issue throughout the hotel industry.

The review offered several recommendations, including:

  • Establishing a new policy to combat violence against women and girls.
  • Enhancing safety protocols for staff working alone.
  • Implementing body cameras for all reception personnel.
  • Installing uniform CCTV systems across all hotels.
  • Utilizing mystery shoppers to assess the effectiveness of key security policies.

Travelodge expressed its support for the report’s recommendations and announced the formation of a new board committee to oversee their implementation, with plans to monitor progress over the next six to twelve months.

In a statement accompanying the review, Travelodge’s interim chief executive, Ray Reidy, stated: “I sincerely apologize on behalf of Travelodge to all guests where we have fallen short, especially to Lily. We have made notable progress in addressing these issues over the past six months, and we acknowledge that we still have more work to do.”

Reidy also emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing customer service, ensuring appropriate responses to issues, and offering the necessary support and empathy to guests during challenging times.
