Authorities are investigating a situation at the RAF Fairford air base in the UK, leading to the arrest of a dual citizen of the UK and Iran on suspicion of planning terrorist activities.

The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was taken into custody in London. Additionally, a 26-year-old British individual has been interrogated as part of the investigation.

This air base has been utilized by the United States for military operations targeting Iran during the recent hostilities.

British law enforcement is probing a possible terrorism plot linked to the air base, which has implications for U.S. operations against Iran. A significant police presence was mobilized following the arrest of five British men in their twenties on charges related to terrorism and explosives near RAF Fairford on Sunday, local time.

These individuals have since been released without official charges but are currently on police bail. Counter-terrorism officials are examining whether a foreign state might be connected to the situation, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggesting a potential Iranian link.

In a statement, Vicki Evans, Britain’s Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, remarked on the intricacy of the investigation, indicating that multiple avenues are being explored, including the possibility of foreign involvement.

The police operation began in the early hours of Sunday after receiving various tips, including a report from a local farmer who noticed suspicious activity involving three vans near the air base.

Reports indicate that one of the suspects had contacted emergency services shortly before his arrest. While investigators discovered petrol in the vans, they confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were found.

Prime Minister Burnham noted that the UK is collaborating closely with the United States, which has utilized Fairford for missions against Iran. In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed that he would not have permitted the release of the men, who were freed under strict conditions, as he claimed they had intentions of causing significant harm. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also suggested that a foreign actor may be implicated in the affair.

As tensions between the UK and Iran escalate over this incident, the Iranian government has summoned the British Ambassador in Tehran for discussions regarding the matter.
