A seismic event measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale was detected in proximity to the town of Leongatha in Victoria.
According to Geoscience Australia, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers shortly after 2 a.m., with its epicenter located near South Gippsland, approximately 135 kilometers southeast of Melbourne.
The federal agency reported that by 3 a.m., nearly 15,000 individuals had submitted accounts of feeling the quake in the surrounding area. Fortunately, there have been no reports indicating injuries or structural damage.
Hadi Ghasemi, a geophysicist at Geoscience Australia, informed ABC that this was among the most significant tremors the region has encountered in the past twenty years.
“The shaking was extensively felt around the epicenter. It was quite intense, but I do not anticipate any substantial damage,” he stated.
In addition, Geoscience Australia confirmed that an aftershock registering 3.1 in magnitude occurred near Leongatha just prior to 3 a.m.
