In her last press conference before retiring, rugby league icon Ali Brigginshaw urged the NRL to appoint a dedicated chief executive for the women’s league. As she aims for a fairy tale conclusion by securing consecutive premierships with Brisbane, Brigginshaw recognizes that the NRLW still has significant room for development.

During the official pre-grand final press conference, Brigginshaw was asked what she would suggest to newly appointed executive chairman Peter V’landys. She lightheartedly proposed, “If there’s someone overseeing the women’s game, perhaps it could be someone who plays, maybe Millie,” referring to her fellow retiring grand finalist, Millie Elliott from the Roosters. “We need someone who understands the game and our experiences.”

Brigginshaw emphasized that while the aim has been to align the women’s game with the men’s, there is no requirement to strictly follow that model. “We have the freedom to chart our own path and prioritize what is best for NRLW players and staff,” she asserted.

Currently, the women’s league falls under the purview of the NRL’s chief executive, whereas the AFLW has a distinct leadership structure led by Laura Kane.

Tributes to Brigginshaw were also a highlight at the fan event, with suggestions for a commemorative award in her honor. Broncos coach Scott Prince remarked, “Her legacy will endure in the sport for a long time, and I truly hope they establish an award named after Ali.” As a former Dally M medallist, Brigginshaw has led both her state and country, leaving a legacy that commands respect even from her rivals.

Roosters captain Isabelle Kelly expressed admiration for Brigginshaw, calling her a pioneer within the sport. “I’ve been fortunate to know Ali for many years, play alongside her, and witness her leadership firsthand,” Kelly noted. She also praised her retiring teammates, Corban Baxter and Elliott, the 2022 Dally M medallist. “Millie is relentless; she consistently puts her best foot forward and promotes the game positively, making her an inspiration for many young girls. Corban is a humble, wonderful person who has made a significant impact on this game.”

Additionally, the Roosters face a crucial decision regarding winger Jayme Fressard, who is racing to recover from a shoulder injury sustained in last week’s victory over Canberra. She did not return to the field after halftime. Coach John Strange indicated that a final determination will be made after the captain’s run tomorrow, rating Fressard’s chances of playing as “50-50.” “She has a minor issue and will need to pass a few fitness tests, but we are optimistic,” Strange commented. “I just want to focus on being present this week and doing everything necessary to perform at my best.”
