Andy Bell is engaging in a lively conversation covering various subjects. He talks about his farm in Mallorca, where he and his husband, Stephen Moss, have enjoyed a fruitful year harvesting pomegranates, kiwis, and lemons. Additionally, Bell shares his quirky interest in clowns, reminisces about the vibrant nightlife of the 1990s, and expresses concern about becoming “a fussy old grandpa.” He abruptly shifts his focus, noting, “But what about you, Vince? You’ve been rather quiet!”

His bandmate, Vince Clarke, who has only chimed in to offer a greeting since joining the video call from his home in San Diego, smiles and responds, “No, no, I just love listening to you, man. I’m really enjoying this.”

This interaction highlights the established dynamic between the two. Since their formation in 1985, Clarke has preferred to stay behind the scenes, crafting intricately designed electronic hits while concealed behind a wall of synthesizers. In contrast, Bell has taken center stage, adorned in sequins and angel wings, his passionate vocals adding emotional depth to their music. This partnership has proven successful; in the 40 years since the release of their debut album, “Wonderland,” the duo has neither disbanded nor taken a hiatus, nor have they experienced the dramatic conflicts often seen in other bands. “We’ve never been one of those ego-driven groups bringing personal drama into the mix every five minutes,” Bell remarks.

Recently, their enduring friendship has been put to the test. In January 2024, Clarke’s wife, Tracy Hurley Martin, passed away due to stomach cancer. A generally reserved person, Clarke finds it challenging to discuss this painful experience, but he readily commends his bandmate’s unwavering support.

This mutual support has influenced their latest album, “Radio!! Radio!!,” marking an impressive 20th studio release. The album will coincide with an arena tour across the UK and Europe, albeit with a notable change: for the first time in their history, Clarke will not be present in person. Instead, he will serve as the tour’s musical director remotely, with keyboard technician Howard Rider handling the synthesizers during performances.

When asked if Tracy’s passing is the primary reason for Clarke stepping back, there is a long pause before he simply answers, “Yes.”

Do they consider each other best friends?

Is it challenging to express that sentiment without sounding outdated?
