A pilot sustained injuries during a recent emergency incident involving Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which experienced a dramatic descent. Passengers were largely unaware of the unfolding crisis inside the cockpit until Captain Smit Machchhar successfully opened the cockpit door, allowing crew members to intervene. In the days following the incident, the Indian pilot recounted the harrowing experience to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, investigators are probing the co-pilot’s identity, motivations, and any potential connections to broader security concerns.
Flydubai Flight FZ1073 departed from Dubai at 03:05 GMT, en route to Tel Aviv. The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was carrying 182 individuals at the time, as reported by the Associated Press.
Initially, the flight proceeded without incident for over two hours, cruising smoothly over Saudi Arabia as it headed toward Israel.
According to a reconstruction using Flightradar24 data, the flight path is illustrated, showing that it never reached its intended destination. Instead, it made a turn back over Jordan and conducted an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
At 05:42, the aircraft veered westward, briefly entering Jordanian airspace at an altitude of 15,000 feet. Just minutes later, at 05:46, it executed a 180-degree turn back towards Tabuk. Investigators are expected to explore the reasoning behind this unusual flight path.
The descent began at 05:21:09, and by 05:22:40, the aircraft had plummeted to 16,600 feet, losing more than half of its altitude. The plane then ascended to 21,725 feet before descending again to 15,000 feet at 05:24:29, maintaining that altitude until landing. Reports indicate that this period involved approximately 200 seconds of rapid descents and climbs.
Captain Smit Machchhar suffered serious injuries, while the co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, stands accused of assaulting him. Videos shared from the cabin show passengers standing in the aisles as the emergency unfolded, although these clips have not been independently verified and do not depict any injuries.
Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling crew members and passengers to rush in and subdue the co-pilot. A reserve pilot on board then took control of the aircraft.
At 05:28, the crew transmitted a squawk code of 7700, indicating a general emergency. This was later changed to 7500, signifying unlawful interference or a hijacking, which was maintained for about an hour before reverting back to 7700 at 06:28.
Nearly four hours after its departure, the aircraft successfully landed in Tabuk. The Indian Embassy in the UAE has reported that Captain Machchhar is recovering; he received initial treatment in Tabuk and was subsequently airlifted to the UAE, where he is currently hospitalized in Abu Dhabi following a visit from India’s ambassador.
In terms of the investigation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that the co-pilot was influenced by “Islamist radical indoctrination” and described him as “suicidal.” However, details supporting these claims have not been provided. The co-pilot was arrested and is currently undergoing interrogation in Saudi Arabia, although his name and the motive for his actions remain undisclosed.
The UAE is also investigating any potential terrorist affiliations, premeditated actions, or directives related to the incident. In response to the event, Israel has announced it will implement stricter vetting of pilots on all flights into the country. Commercial flights between Israel and the UAE have been temporarily halted, and Israel is initiating repatriation flights for passengers affected by the situation.
While early reports referred to the incident as a suspected hijacking, a more recent analysis by the Associated Press suggests that it may have been an attempt by the co-pilot to crash the aircraft rather than a takeover. Witnesses and Israeli authorities have indicated that the captain was stabbed, leading to the aircraft’s steep descent before the attacker was restrained.
Netanyahu has reiterated that the co-pilot seemed to intend to bring the aircraft down, although no evidence has been presented to confirm this assertion. A regional official stated that all possible scenarios, ranging from terrorism to mental health issues, are being investigated, and nothing is being ruled out at this stage.
The UAE, the country where the aircraft is registered, is assessing whether the co-pilot’s actions were motivated by terrorism. Flydubai has confirmed that the situation was brought under control by the crew members on duty, who safely diverted and landed the aircraft.
As the investigation continues, authorities will seek to clarify various aspects of the incident, including the motives of the co-pilot and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
