Nearly 3 million additional viewers tuned in for the latest season of Celebrity Traitors compared to its inaugural episode, solidifying its reputation as one of the few television programs that can effectively draw in a large audience nationwide.

During the airing of the season premiere, over half of the television viewers at that time opted to watch the new group of celebrities as they entered the show’s iconic castle, where host Claudia Winkleman selected the initial group of traitors.

The premiere episode aired on Thursday night and attracted an average of 8.9 million viewers, capturing a 54.9% share of the total viewing audience, as reported by overnight figures from Digital i.

In contrast, the first episode of the previous year’s season, which aired a bit later in the evening, garnered an average audience of 6.1 million and a 46.4% share of viewers.

Celebrity Traitors has emerged as a rare instance of a program that can engage a truly widespread audience, quickly becoming one of the BBC’s prized assets as it strives to demonstrate its value to all viewers.

Despite a significant decline in live television viewership among Generation Z, the show achieved an impressive 83.5% share among 16- to 34-year-olds during its time slot, translating to an average audience of 1.6 million for that demographic.

Helen Daddow, an analyst at Digital i, noted, “Throughout the previous season, excitement for the show grew as it progressed, culminating near the finale when it became a significant topic of discussion for much of the country. This anticipation likely attracted both new viewers and dedicated fans of Traitors to tune in for the live premiere last night, including those who typically do not watch live TV, such as the 16 to 34 age group.”

Audience numbers have been bolstered by a high-profile cast that features notable figures such as actors Richard E Grant and Michael Sheen, as well as Bella Ramsey, former model Jerry Hall, and comedians Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Acaster.

Industry insiders suggest that the engaging nature of the show’s gameplay, along with its growing popularity, makes it easy to attract prominent personalities to participate.

Additionally, the program has shown the potential to enhance the careers of established celebrities, including last year’s champion, comedian Alan Carr. Participants like former England rugby player Joe Marler have also experienced significant advancements in their media careers following their time on the show.
