Bruce Baird, a former politician with the Liberal Party, has passed away at the age of 84.
He was the father of Mike Baird, who served as the Premier of New South Wales, and journalist Julia Baird.
The New South Wales Liberal Party issued a statement on Friday to acknowledge Mr. Baird’s contributions.
“Bruce was a dedicated member of the party and a highly regarded politician, having served the citizens of New South Wales in both state and federal legislatures,” a representative remarked.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family during this challenging time on behalf of all party members.”
After a substantial career in state politics, Baird represented the federal electorate of Cook in the Sutherland Shire from 1998 until 2007.
This seat was subsequently won by former Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Baird chose to retire before the general elections in 2007, expressing his regret over never having been appointed as a minister in the Howard administration.
“I have no regrets, and in politics, one must learn to adapt to challenges,” he stated at that time.
In 2010, Baird was honored with the title of Member of the Order of Australia.
