The recent heavy rainfall that affected the Asian Games cricket matches in Japan has finally subsided, paving the way for a thrilling gold medal clash between India and Pakistan at Korogi Sports Park this Saturday.
Among India’s star-studded lineup, one young player has particularly caught the spotlight. At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has demonstrated a remarkable ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
His prowess first became evident during the Under-19 World Cup final, where he scored an impressive 175 runs off just 80 deliveries, leading India to a commanding 100-run victory over England.
In the months that followed, he continued to impress on the professional stage, making headlines with a blistering 97 runs off 26 balls for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, followed by a crucial 96 runs off 47 balls in the Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans. His exceptional performances earned him the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.
Sooryavanshi’s success continued in the India A tri-series final against Sri Lanka A, where he scored 94 runs off just 29 balls. His consistent ability to rise to the occasion has been a defining feature of his young career, and now he faces the ultimate challenge: a final against Pakistan with a gold medal on the line at the Asian Games.
However, Pakistan may pose a unique challenge for Sooryavanshi. Throughout his international career, he has been dismissed by off-spin bowlers on three occasions. Although this data is limited, it gives the Pakistani team a potential strategy to exploit.
While the current squad lacks a primary off-spinner, there are alternatives available. Saim Ayub’s off-spin played a pivotal role in helping the team reach the final, as he took 1 wicket for just 3 runs in two overs during the semi-final against Bangladesh. Other spin options include Abrar Ahmed, Arafat Minhas, and Sufyan Moqim, with Minhas claiming 2 wickets for 23 runs against Bangladesh and Moqim taking 3 wickets for 26 runs.
This variety in bowling styles could be crucial for Pakistan, especially in testing Sooryavanshi with different angles and trajectories during the powerplay.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, in a discussion with the Sony Sports Network, advised Sooryavanshi to maintain his current approach. He emphasized that the young player possesses a good sense of the game and is not merely a flat-pitch hitter. Manjrekar expressed confidence in Sooryavanshi’s temperament for big matches.
In his previous game against Sri Lanka, on a pitch that favored spin bowlers, Sooryavanshi managed to hit off-spinner Tharindu Ratnayake for a four, a six, and another four before being dismissed for 38 runs.
Despite the rain-soaked conditions in Japan, which have resulted in challenging playing surfaces with significant cracks, Manjrekar noted that Sooryavanshi is adept at handling spin bowlers. He recalled Sooryavanshi’s dismissal in the semi-final, pointing out that opponents often introduce spin early in the innings against him. He observed positive signs in Sooryavanshi’s recent performances, such as his ability to wait on the back foot and deliver strong cuts against spinners.
Nevertheless, overthinking the matchup could be risky. If Sooryavanshi is given a loose delivery, he has the potential to quickly put India in a commanding position. Manjrekar remarked that Sooryavanshi is a formidable opponent, known for his aggressive style and ability to take calculated risks rather than playing conservatively.
Having already experienced finals and high-pressure scenarios this year, the real question for Sooryavanshi on Saturday is not whether he can handle the occasion, but whether he can seize the moment and make it memorable once again. This time, however, the stakes are higher, as he faces a formidable opponent.
