This morning, a tragic incident occurred in Wallsend, where a vehicle struck a gathering of Newcastle Knights fans around 9:30 AM, resulting in injuries to nine individuals.
According to NSW Ambulance, two of the injured are in critical condition, with one reported to be stable. Witnesses indicated that the driver lost control of the car before the collision.
In response to the accident, emergency services dispatched four helicopters and 15 ambulances to the scene. The Knights’ team coach was redirected as a precaution but has since arrived safely in Sydney.
The Newcastle Knights organization released a statement acknowledging the incident, expressing their concern for those affected, including victims and their families. Chris James, the club’s director of football, stated, “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the incident. As this is now under investigation by NSW Police, we will refrain from further comments.”
A fan present at the scene recounted the events to ABC News. Arriving at 8:30 AM with his mother and two young daughters, he noted the atmosphere was lively as supporters awaited the team bus. However, the mood shifted dramatically when the accident occurred. “A BMW came around the corner revving its engine and crashed into a group of people,” he described, expressing his shock at witnessing the chaos unfold.
He observed that the inclement weather may have contributed to the accident and recounted seeing young children injured and bystanders rushing to assist the victims. “Everyone was screaming for help, and there was only one police officer present, who quickly joined the rescue efforts,” he added, suggesting that a greater police presence might have prevented the tragedy.
Another witness informed ABC News that the driver appeared to be an excited fan who lost control of the vehicle. “He was revving his engine, caught up in the moment, and somehow lost control,” he noted.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris has confirmed that the driver has been arrested following the crash. While details continue to emerge, it has been established that the fans had gathered to bid farewell to the Knights as they departed for the NRL grand final in Sydney. All nine injured individuals have been transported to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. Please stay tuned for further updates.
