On Friday afternoon, a Hindu temple located in the Greater Cleveland area of Ohio was vandalized when bricks were thrown at it, shattering windows while priests and worshippers were present inside, according to reports from the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA).

The incident took place at approximately 1:30 PM local time at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, as noted by HAF in a message shared on X. The organization stated that the vandalism resulted in “significant damage” and mentioned that security footage is being analyzed by law enforcement officials.

CoHNA reported that the attack happened while individuals were inside the temple, leading to the destruction of windows. They have called upon Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and local law enforcement to denounce the act and to take prompt action against those responsible.

As of now, there has been no public identification of a suspect, nor has there been any confirmation of an arrest. Authorities have also not disclosed any motive behind the attack.

HAF characterized the event as potentially a hate crime and stated that they would notify the FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. They also urged elected officials and government entities to speak out against the hate speech directed at Hindu and Indian-American communities.

“This is a serious situation. Online hate has transformed into a tangible attack on a Hindu temple,” remarked Suhag Shukla, executive director of HAF, in a post on X, emphasizing the need to analyze the surveillance footage to identify the offender.

CoHNA labeled the event as an expression of “Hinduphobia,” noting that it coincided with the onset of Hindu Heritage Month celebrations in Ohio, with the festival of Navratri set to begin in less than ten days. The organization did not provide any evidence linking the attack to a religious motivation.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns raised by Hindu-American organizations regarding vandalism and assaults aimed at Hindu places of worship across the United States. CoHNA has previously documented instances of vandalism at Hindu temples in various states, including New York and California. However, it remains unclear if the recent attack is connected to those prior incidents.
