A close associate of Captain Dhaval Patel, who was involved in an attack during a flight to Israel, expressed his disbelief after viewing footage of the incident. He shared with ABC that witnessing such events happen to loved ones can be profoundly upsetting.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the victim of the attack, has been relocated to Abu Dhabi for additional medical care and is reportedly making a good recovery, as confirmed by the Indian embassy in the United Arab Emirates.

During his pilot training, Machchhar was affectionately nicknamed “Smit Mac” by his friends. Captain Patel, who trained alongside him in New Zealand, has known him for nearly twenty years. Patel recalled, “He always helped his colleagues and peers, imparting his extensive aviation knowledge with clarity.” He also mentioned the honor of receiving his fourth stripe as a captain from Machchhar.

Upon seeing the footage of the attack on Machchhar, Patel was taken aback. “The moment I caught the first glimpse, I couldn’t believe it was Captain Smit,” he recounted. “It was devastating to watch and listen to what occurred. When it happens to someone you care for, it truly breaks you.”

Reports suggest that Machchhar was assaulted by his co-pilot, who allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft, according to statements from Israel’s Prime Minister. As Machchhar recuperates in the hospital, he is being celebrated as a hero not only by his friends and fellow countrymen in India but also by people globally.

In a statement released through X by the Saudi Arabian embassy in the U.S., preliminary investigations revealed that “the first officer attacked the aircraft captain, resulting in injuries to both.” Following the incident, Machchhar was taken to Abu Dhabi for treatment and is said to be recovering well. His family has traveled from India to be with him during this time.

During a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Machchhar recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I was fighting for my life on the plane. I have been a pilot for 17 years and captain for 11. I can sense what is happening in-flight, even with my eyes closed.” He detailed the struggle, noting, “When I was on the floor, I felt the aircraft descending and urged myself to push through. Despite being stabbed, I managed to open the door, allowing others to enter.” He emphasized that while he was fighting for his own survival, he was equally concerned about the safety of the passengers. “Afterward, I received tremendous support and top-notch medical care here in Saudi Arabia,” he added.

Prime Minister Modi commended Machchhar’s bravery, stating that he had performed such an extraordinary act that not only Indians but people worldwide wished to meet him.

Patel expressed his relief at seeing Machchhar’s steady recovery, stating, “It was a relief to see him improving and responding positively to treatment.” He also expressed pride in witnessing his friend being recognized by Modi and other global leaders, saying, “It fills our entire community with pride to see one of our own honored by our esteemed Prime Minister.”
