CBS News New York has obtained newly released police body camera footage that reveals the moments when officers from Altoona, Pennsylvania, apprehended Luigi Mangione, concluding a five-day search for him following the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in 2024.

The footage also documents the subsequent search of Mangione’s belongings and was presented during a suppression hearing in December 2025. At that hearing, Mangione’s legal team contended that the search of his backpack infringed upon his rights.

This marks the first instance of the footage being publicly accessible outside of a courtroom setting.

In December 2024, police acted on a 911 call indicating that a man suspected of the shooting was having breakfast at a McDonald’s in Altoona.

The body camera video depicts officers interrogating Mangione about a fraudulent driver’s license bearing the name “Mark Rosario.” During the exchange, Mangione eventually disclosed his true identity and acknowledged that he “shouldn’t have” misrepresented himself.

The footage further reveals the transport of Mangione to the police station, where a strip search was conducted. Investigators discovered a firearm in his backpack, which prosecutors later connected to the crime scene.

A state judge has ruled that the majority of the evidence gathered from the search will be admissible in court.

Legal analyst Richard Shorenstein noted that the officers featured in the body camera footage appeared unconcerned about safety, despite the prosecution’s assertion that searching the backpack at McDonald’s was crucial for safety reasons.

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. He is also facing charges of second-degree murder, weapons offenses, and forgery. A previous charge of first-degree murder was dismissed in his state trial last year.

He is set to receive sentencing for the federal charges in December, with a determination on the progression of the state case still pending.
