Greg Freeman’s latest album, titled “All Set the Bone,” presents an exhilarating yet tumultuous listening experience, akin to a high-pressure cooker ready to explode. Hailing from Maryland, Freeman is a singer-songwriter whose voice often seems to be pushing its limits. While he is associated with the burgeoning indie rock movement that has gained traction in recent years, the tracks on this double album are anything but comfortable. The song “Marooned” features frantic guitar and drum riffs that evoke a sense of disquiet, while the opening track “Cahokia” disrupts the traditional catharsis found in classic American road songs, spiraling into chaotic territory. His lyrics frequently touch upon various anxieties, both significant and minor; for instance, he poses the question in “Culture,” “Who do you turn to when you’re all alone? When all your heroes have lost their microphones?”

Freeman gained recognition with his previous album “Burnover,” a collection of tightly woven narrative songs that balanced humor, delirium, and emotional depth. His unique talent lies in fusing a literary approach with loud, bold, and riff-driven music, which could easily fit within the mainstream rock genre. “All Set the Bone” showcases a grander ambition in both scale and songwriting, leaning towards more abstract and image-rich compositions. While it is a compelling record, it may not be as instantly captivating as its predecessor. Written during his travels across the United States and amid significant personal changes, the album reflects a sense of searching and introspection. Although “All Set the Bone” may lack the explosive energy of “Burnover,” Freeman still demonstrates a considerable creative spark throughout the project.
