After a nine-day wait, India experienced a remarkable surge in success at the Asian Games on Friday, securing a total of six gold medals, marking the nation’s most successful day in the competition’s history. This impressive haul propelled India into the top five of the overall medal standings. The day began with historic achievements in archery and culminated in a triumphant victory for the women’s hockey team, who claimed a gold medal against formidable competition.

The event’s emcee heralded South Korea as a ten-time Olympic champion, a title that resonated with 17-year-old archery sensation Kumkum Mohod, who confidently declared, “But today, the Asian Games title will be ours.” Shortly thereafter, she and her teammates Kirti Sharma and Ankita Bhakat made history by defeating the dominant South Korean archers.

In a remarkable turnaround, boxer Parveen Hooda, who had previously earned a bronze in Hangzhou only for it to be stripped away due to an anti-doping violation, returned to the Asian Games and clinched a gold medal on Friday.

Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal, who had missed the last Asian Games due to unforeseen circumstances, finally seized his opportunity in his debut Asiad, triumphing in the challenging 65 kg wrestling category.

The women’s hockey team, having missed qualification for the Paris Olympics and dealing with internal challenges, saw a revival under coach Sjoerd Marijne. They achieved a historic victory over China in the final, securing only the second gold medal in Asian Games history and booking their ticket to the Los Angeles Olympics.

Gold medals were earned across various sports within mere hours in Aichi, contributing to over half of India’s gold medal count as of that day. With 76 total medals—16 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze—India’s performance significantly strengthened its position in the medal rankings.

In Okazaki, the Indian archers celebrated their groundbreaking achievement after defeating South Korea 5-3 in the women’s recurve team event, a category in which India had not previously claimed gold since its introduction to the Asian Games in 1994. This victory ended South Korea’s long-standing dominance in the event, a title they had held since 1998.

Meanwhile, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, celebrating her 29th birthday, added another milestone to her career by winning the Asian Games gold in Japan, a country that had previously bestowed an Olympic bronze upon her. She became only the second Indian boxer to achieve this feat, following in the footsteps of Mary Kom.

Parveen Hooda stepped into the ring with the weight of her past disappointment but emerged victorious, defeating Nien-chin Chen of Chinese Taipei in a closely contested bout to convert her lost bronze into gold.

In another significant victory, young boxer Ankush Panghal, eager to establish his place among the elite, proved his capabilities by claiming gold after a challenging match.

Sujeet Kalkal faced a daunting 9-2 deficit in his final match but staged a remarkable comeback, scoring four rapid takedowns to win 10-9, solidifying his status as a serious contender for future competitions.

As the day concluded, the women’s hockey team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over China, marking the culmination of a gold rush that had swept across Aichi.

With only one day remaining in the competition, Saturday holds the promise of further success for India, including the men’s cricket team facing Pakistan in the final, the hockey team competing against Malaysia for gold, and golfers aiming to protect their leads. Additionally, archers like Kumkum Mohod will return for individual rounds, having already contributed to India’s historic achievements.
