Christa Pike is currently in a critical condition and reliant on a ventilator for breathing, two days following a failed lethal injection execution in Tennessee, as reported by her legal representatives on Friday through a recent statement and court documentation.

According to her attorneys, Pike is intubated and receiving urgent medical attention at a hospital in the Nashville area.

The new legal filing seeks a court order mandating the Tennessee Department of Correction to “protect and preserve all evidence related to the State’s unsuccessful execution attempt” on Wednesday.

The attorneys disclosed in the court documents that the execution team from the Tennessee Department of Correction employed a minimum of seven needles in their effort to carry out the execution. At one stage, Pike reportedly provided suggestions regarding a possible access point, as stated by her legal team.

One of the needles was reported to have been bent at a right angle upon its removal from her body. The filing indicates that throughout the execution attempt, Pike was heard crying, whimpering, and exhibiting labored breathing, expressing discomfort by stating her arm felt “like it’s about to burst open” and questioning, “does this happen like that?”

The filing also emphasized that Pike and her legal counsel had previously alerted the state to her blood condition, which could complicate the lethal injection process. Additionally, she mentioned a history of difficulties for medical professionals in locating veins and inserting IVs.

Pike has sustained considerable injuries to her arms as a result of the failed execution, according to her attorneys. Upon her arrival at the hospital, both arms were described as “swollen, burned, and blistered.” Experts and Pike’s legal team indicated that pentobarbital can cause skin and tissue burns if it escapes the veins.

The attorneys argued that the IV team from the Tennessee Department of Correction appeared unaware that the IVs were improperly positioned or that the veins had ruptured, allowing pentobarbital to leak into her body. “Instead of correcting this error,” they stated, the execution team proceeded with administering a second dose of pentobarbital.

The lawyers emphasized in their filing, “The botched execution of Ms. Pike makes it abundantly clear that the TDOC failed to correctly position or maintain IV lines.”

They added that medical staff at the hospital are actively working to stabilize her condition and eliminate the pentobarbital from her system.

Luke Ihnen, one of Pike’s attorneys, stated, “We are collaborating closely with those closest to Christa to honor her wishes, ensure her privacy, and protect her rights as a patient during this incredibly challenging time.”

Her legal team has previously labeled the execution attempt as “cruel,” “torturous,” and “predictable.”

Attorney Randy Spivey remarked to the press on Thursday, “The state of Tennessee has demonstrated once again that they are incapable of executing an individual in a manner that upholds basic human dignity.”

Spivey has urged Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute Pike’s death sentence. Currently, her execution is suspended following Governor Lee’s decision to halt all scheduled executions in the state for the remainder of the year. He has also called for a “comprehensive, third-party review to ascertain what transpired.”

Pike was poised to become the first woman executed in Tennessee since the 1800s after the Supreme Court permitted her execution to proceed. She was sentenced to death for the murder of her former classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in 1995.

According to court documents, Pike and Slemmer were both students at the Job Corps Center in Knoxville when Pike, then 18 years old, allegedly tortured and killed Slemmer, 19, over comments regarding Pike’s relationship. Pike is now 50 years old.
