On Friday, police bodycam footage was made public, capturing the moment officers apprehended Luigi Mangione at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. This arrest is linked to the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, in Manhattan.
In one clip, officers request that Mangione remove the face mask he was using to conceal his identity. “That’s definitely him,” one officer exclaims enthusiastically as they move outside to discuss the situation away from Mangione’s hearing. Another officer responds off-camera, “I told you, man.”
Subsequently, an officer conducts a search of Mangione’s belongings and expresses delight upon discovering a gun cartridge, suggesting they had indeed located their suspect.
The footage stems from Mangione’s arrest on December 9, 2024, in Altoona, just five days following the shooting incident that claimed the life of Thompson, a 50-year-old executive from Minnesota, as he was heading to a hotel in midtown Manhattan for his company’s annual investor conference.
A Manhattan judge authorized the release of these recordings after CNN filed a request. Portions of the footage were previously presented during a December court session where Mangione’s legal team attempted, without success, to have critical evidence dismissed. This included his initial remarks to law enforcement and items confiscated during his arrest.
In August, Mangione entered a guilty plea for federal stalking charges and is facing a potential life sentence at his upcoming sentencing in December. Additionally, he is charged with murder in New York state court, but those proceedings have been delayed indefinitely as his attorneys work to have the case dismissed.
