At the age of 90, Toshisuke Kanazawa, a Japanese bodybuilder, continues to compete and pursue significant achievements in his sport. Recently, the native of Hiroshima clinched victory in the 85-and-over category at the All Japan Masters Fitness Championships, celebrating this win just one day after his birthday. This victory marks his 19th national championship title.
Kanazawa’s dietary habits add an intriguing dimension to his fitness regimen. In a conversation shared by CNN, he revealed that he adheres to a strict vegetarian diet, having eliminated meat and fish from his meals since he resumed bodybuilding at the age of 50. His diet primarily consists of brown rice, natto, and miso soup, supplemented with protein shakes.
For breakfast, he enjoys a combination of brown rice, natto, and miso soup. His lunches and dinners are usually similar, featuring brown rice with a sprinkle of furikake. Kanazawa also incorporates protein shakes into his daily routine three times.
According to Himanshi Sharma, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, “This diet has several healthy elements.” She elaborates that brown rice serves as a source of complex carbohydrates and fiber, while fermented foods like natto and miso contribute to gut health and offer essential nutrients. “Consistent protein intake is crucial for preserving muscle mass, especially as one ages,” she noted in reference to Kanazawa’s protein consumption habits.
However, she cautioned that while Kanazawa thrives on this regimen, it may not be suitable for everyone. “On its own, the diet seems limited in diversity and may lack sufficient fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and micronutrients. For most individuals, a more balanced diet with a greater array of nutrient-dense foods is advisable,” she stated.
Kanazawa’s meals include ingredients often linked to healthy aging, such as whole grains and fermented foods. However, these alone cannot be solely credited with maintaining youthfulness or prolonging life. “No single diet can halt or reverse the aging process, but certain dietary patterns can promote healthy aging. This diet features foods that are associated with longevity, such as fermented products and whole grains, which may help mitigate inflammation and enhance gut health. Adequate protein consumption is also vital for sustaining muscle strength and physical capabilities as we age,” Sharma explained.
She emphasized that a healthy diet is just one aspect of aging well. “Healthy aging relies on a combination of factors, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, and overall lifestyle choices.”
Kanazawa’s journey in bodybuilding is also intertwined with his personal story. He stepped away from the sport at 34 but returned several years later when his wife fell ill, stating that his competition victories were a means to lift her spirits. Despite her passing, Kanazawa has persevered in his competitive pursuits.
Looking ahead, he has set his sights on participating in the 60-and-over division at the World Championships, with a particular aspiration to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger. Kanazawa competed in Mr. Universe during the same era that Schwarzenegger was a contender in Mr. Olympia. Even at 90, he holds onto the dream of finally encountering the bodybuilding icon.
