The Traitors is fundamentally a game centered around deception, where the objective is to obscure one’s true intentions to execute a series of murders without detection. This has consistently been the essence of the game until Richard E Grant entered the scene.
During the premiere of Celebrity Traitors, Grant’s approach was quite unconventional. First, he was chosen by Claudia Winkleman to be a traitor. Then, in a surprising twist, he immediately disclosed his status as a traitor to everyone.
This bold move left Joe Lycett, who was taken aback, to remark that such a revelation had never occurred in the history of The Traitors. The game relies on players using deductive reasoning and instinct to identify traitors among them, a task that becomes significantly more challenging when a participant openly admits to being the antagonist.
It’s easy to see why Grant has never featured in an episode of Columbo, as his storyline would likely entail him approaching Peter Falk and proclaiming, “Hello there, I am a murderer,” leading to his swift arrest within half a minute—hardly compelling television.
However, there are some upsides to Grant’s audacity. By declaring himself a traitor, he has inadvertently propelled the game into uncharted territory. Except for Jerry Hall, who seems to have a questionable grasp on the situation, all the other contestants believe Grant is indeed a traitor. Consequently, it falls to him and his confused ally, Maya Jama, to manage the chaos, diverting suspicion away from themselves. In this high-pressure environment, he has become a cornered animal, which can often be the most formidable.
This situation compels Grant to lean into his eccentricities, convincing others that his bizarre confession is simply another quirk of his personality. To maintain this ruse, he must embody the role of the eccentric uncle of the group, engaging in odd behavior such as muttering to himself, conversing with inanimate objects, and indulging in whimsical antics. This is likely his best strategy for survival in the competition.
A pressing question remains about whether Grant’s actions were calculated or merely impulsive. His shocked expression following his admission hints at the latter. Social media reactions have echoed this sentiment, as seasoned viewers of The Traitors know that attracting early attention can often lead to a swift elimination.
Anita Singh from the Telegraph labeled Grant as the “lord of chaos,” while Emily Bootle from the i referred to his revelation as “a cock-up.” Bootle further remarked, “This is the only show that could be completely sabotaged in the first episode and for that to somehow make it even better.”
If Grant manages to navigate this tumultuous beginning, he may find himself with the freedom to eliminate competitors at will. For the moment, all eyes are on him—though it remains uncertain how long this spotlight will last.
