On Saturday, South African cricket prodigy Lhuan-dre Pretorius achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the T20 world record previously held by West Indies icon Chris Gayle. Pretorius scored an impressive 189 runs off just 75 balls during the CSA T20 Challenge.
Batting as an opener for the Titans against the Knights in Bloemfontein, the young left-handed batsman exhibited an explosive performance, hitting 15 fours and 13 sixes while remaining not out, leading his team to a total of 267 runs for the loss of three wickets in their 20 overs.
This extraordinary innings broke Gayle’s former T20 record of 175 runs, which he set while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (now Bengaluru) against Pune Warriors in the 2013 Indian Premier League.
Although he fell short of reaching a double century, this was Pretorius’ third T20 century in only 91 matches. He has shown exceptional form in this format, having scored 101 and 94 runs in his last two T20 international appearances for South Africa against Namibia and Zimbabwe, respectively.
Pretorius started off aggressively, reaching his fifty in a mere 24 balls and requiring just 16 additional deliveries to achieve his century, which he completed in 40 balls. He then accelerated to 150 runs off 58 balls, equaling the record for the longest innings in men’s T20 history in terms of balls faced, held by Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis.
