A tornado struck parts of the south coast of New South Wales, particularly affecting the Ulladulla region and resulting in extensive damage.

Shortly after 1 PM today, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the area, alerting residents to potential damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that a tornado did pass through the vicinity, labeling the occurrence as “very unusual.”

Footage captured during the event shows a rotating air column traversing a residential neighborhood.

Additional video from a local café depicts staff hurriedly clearing tables and chairs as heavy rain and fierce winds approach, causing umbrellas to be tossed about.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) reported receiving over 90 requests for help statewide, with 29 of those calls originating from the Ulladulla area.

Emergency crews are currently addressing issues such as roofs being torn off homes, displaced tiles and skylights, as well as downed trees and power lines.

Numerous properties are also experiencing power outages as a result of the storm.

An SES incident management team has been established in Ulladulla, with responders from nearby Nowra—where nearly 17 millimeters of rain has fallen since 9 AM—and other local areas mobilizing to assist.

The SES anticipates an increase in calls for assistance, as severe thunderstorms are predicted to persist throughout the evening.
