In response to your editorial regarding Andy Burnham’s speech at the conference on September 29, it is essential for all governments to prioritize genuine enhancements to the quality of life for individuals, especially those who are most disadvantaged, while avoiding the creation of future challenges. Achieving this objective necessitates that government officials assess what truly matters and utilize this information to inform their choices.
Fortunately for the Prime Minister and his team, the Office for National Statistics has already compiled substantial data concerning our lives through its UK Measures of National Well-being Dashboard. However, there is little indication that this valuable information has influenced policymaking, particularly in relation to tax and budgetary frameworks.
If the aim is to enhance the lives of citizens, it is crucial that well-being metrics play a significant role in decisions regarding taxation, financial allocations, and public services.
