In a significant development regarding the murder of a 60-year-old woman from Kuddha village in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, law enforcement officials have exonerated five individuals initially implicated in the case. The investigation has led to the arrest of the victim’s son, Mahendra Singh, who is accused of fatally attacking her while she slept, allegedly in a calculated effort to frame his adversaries.
Authorities stated that forensic evidence, including the results of a polygraph examination and the findings from the autopsy, played a pivotal role in uncovering the facts surrounding the incident. Furthermore, inconsistencies were detected in the statements given by Mahendra Singh, aged 35, who is the son of the deceased, Ram Beti.
Upon being presented with the evidence collected throughout the inquiry, Mahendra admitted to the murder, according to police reports.
Mahendra, who operates a general store, reportedly informed investigators that he struck his mother on the head with a blunt instrument while she was asleep outside, intending to divert suspicion towards his rivals.
Inspector Sanjay Dheer, who is leading the Special Investigation Team assigned to the case, confirmed, “We established Mahendra Singh’s connection to the crime and apprehended him on Thursday.” During the investigation, police administered polygraph tests to six individuals, which included the five initially named in the first information report (FIR) and a relative, following judicial authorization.
While authorities attempted to conduct polygraph tests on Mahendra, his wife, and his elder brother Gajendra Singh, they declined to participate.
The inquiry revealed a long-standing conflict between Mahendra’s family and a distant relative, Nathu Singh, concerning the operation of a ration shop. Mahendra purportedly believed that Nathu and his family had unfairly implicated his nephew, who had recently been arrested under the Arms Act.
Police also verified the alibis of those named in the FIR at the time of the murder. Reports indicate that the victim had stayed at her son Mahendra’s residence the day prior to her death.
Following the incident, the victim’s eldest son, Gajendra Singh, filed an FIR against five of their distant relatives at Bhamora police station. Initially, Mahendra claimed that on the evening of August 6, he and his mother had dinner together around 7:30 PM, and he remained with her until approximately 11:30 PM. He stated that he then moved her cot outside at her request before he, along with his wife and children, retired to his brother’s home nearby for the night.
Upon returning home the next morning, Mahendra claimed to have discovered his mother deceased. However, the medical examiner indicated that the murder occurred roughly two hours after their dinner, raising doubts about Mahendra’s account. Inspector Dheer noted, “We identified discrepancies in Mahendra’s narrative. Upon further questioning, he confessed to the crime.”
