Thomas Tuchel has indicated that the England players from Manchester City are experiencing concerns regarding the club’s potential violation of Premier League financial regulations.
Tuchel, who expressed willingness to continue selecting City players even if the club faced relegation, mentioned that the issue has been a significant topic of discussion among the England team ahead of their Nations League match against Croatia. He acknowledged that conversations about the situation have taken place during meal times and candidly responded when asked if this matter had become a distraction.
“If I were to claim that it isn’t a distraction, I would only be speaking for myself, which would be quite shortsighted,” Tuchel remarked. “It is indeed a topic of discussion. Whether it constitutes a distraction is uncertain.” He elaborated, “It certainly comes up in conversations at dinner tables with eight or twelve people, and during breakfast. I am aware that the Manchester City players receive numerous messages, calls, and feedback concerning this matter.”
Tuchel continued, “Are they anxious or worried? It would be a natural human reaction to feel unsettled when the future of the club you represent is uncertain. They are still young and ambitious, being told they are completely innocent while having no clarity regarding the situation. It is indeed a subject of conversation.”
Though Tuchel is unsure if this concern affects the players’ focus, he noted that he hasn’t observed any distractions during meetings or in their interactions with teammates, nor in their training sessions. “It’s a relevant topic; how could it not be?” he added.
The Football Association prevented further inquiries directed at Tuchel regarding whether the City case poses a threat to English football. Manchester City continues to assert its innocence and announced plans to appeal the ruling on Friday.
For Tuchel, his attention remains on his current squad. He has included three City players in this camp: Elliot Anderson, Marc Guéhi, and Nico O’Reilly, the latter of whom has withdrawn due to injury. Guéhi made a significant mistake in last weekend’s loss to Spain, and Anderson did not perform at his best during the victory over Czechia last Tuesday. Nevertheless, Tuchel believes both are prepared to start against Croatia on Saturday evening.
England currently sits in second place in Group A3 with three points from two matches. Jordan Pickford, maintaining his position as the first-choice goalkeeper, will take over for James Trafford. Tuchel also needs to decide whether to reinstate Jarell Quansah at right-back after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impressive performance against Czechia in Prague.
Alexander-Arnold was an unused substitute when England played a draw in Rijeka back in 2018, and his position remains in question. Tuchel contemplated whether this moment is critical for the Real Madrid defender, who will turn 28 next week. “Perhaps it is,” he suggested. “Being in camp presents a significant opportunity, especially if other players are unavailable. Trent is a unique talent; he doesn’t fit the mold of a typical runner who overlaps or underlaps.”
Tuchel noted that Alexander-Arnold is developing a rapport with Bukayo Saka. “Bukayo usually thrives with a lot of movement around him,” he explained. “That dynamic typically brings out the best in him. They need to ensure they aren’t too static or overly focused on ball possession, and that they engage in dynamic movement. This poses a challenge for Trent: to embrace a slightly different approach and move out of his comfort zone. He is making an effort, and it’s never too late to make an impression.”
Tuchel expressed satisfaction with Saka’s current performance level. The Arsenal winger faced fitness challenges during the World Cup but has been a consistent performer for his club this season. “He has made a strong start,” Tuchel noted. “I can see that he is free of pain. He had a somewhat unusual conclusion to last season, playing through discomfort and impacting matches while struggling to exert a significant influence—yet still managing to score crucial goals.”
He added, “Now, I feel he is more engaged and poses a greater threat at the beginning of the season, and I believe there is still more to come from him when he plays for England.”
