At the age of 29, I found myself at a crossroads after losing my hospitality career due to the pandemic. In a bid for a fresh start, I decided to participate as a contestant on MasterChef Australia. By the time I was eliminated in 2021, restaurants were still closed, leaving me uncertain about my future. As my lease in Melbourne was nearing its end, I struggled with the impacts of lockdowns and the attention from viewers who recognized me from the show. Consequently, I chose to retreat to my father’s home in Adelaide for a while.

By early 2022, I had begun dating someone, but after a few months, he unexpectedly cut off all communication.

One sunny autumn weekend, while I was dismally piecing together flatpack furniture at my dad’s house, I realized I needed to escape the confines of the home. I logged onto Grindr and started chatting with a charming guy named Chris, who had just arrived from England.

Having lived in the UK during my early twenties, I understood how challenging it could be to forge connections in a new city. Still reeling from my recent heartbreak, I invited Chris out for drinks—platonic, of course—so we could both enjoy the beautiful day without feeling lonely. He was thrilled with the idea.

We met at Brighton Beach, where we shared a beer and ended up having one of the most delightful and unexpected dates imaginable, lasting nine hours! Our conversation flowed effortlessly, and despite not expecting any romantic spark, we both felt it. We ended the night together.

The following day, I took Chris on a tour of Adelaide’s wine regions before he continued his journey to Sydney, where he was set to start a new chapter in his life. I assumed I would never see him again.

To my surprise, we maintained contact as Chris settled into Sydney. As fate would have it, by May—just over a month after our initial meeting—we both found ourselves back in Melbourne. Chris had received a job offer, and I had always intended to return, leading us to inadvertently become a sort of couple, even without fully acknowledging our feelings.

In July, I was scheduled to participate in a reality show called The Challenge, which was being filmed in Argentina. The show had elements reminiscent of Survivor and Big Brother, and I honestly expected to be eliminated within a week. To my astonishment, I excelled and made it to the finals.

During the competition, we were limited to a single 15-minute video call each week. Over that month, I utilized 53 of my 60 minutes solely to converse with Chris.

I typically struggle with vulnerability, but the rigors of the show pushed me to my limits. The constant filming and demanding challenges took a toll on my mental well-being. Even though we weren’t officially a couple, Chris was there for me at all hours, offering unwavering support without any pretense.

In the final week of the competition, we were given the opportunity to write a letter to someone significant in our lives. I chose to write to Chris, pouring out my emotions. I confessed that I was falling for him, and if he ever read the letter, it would mean I had fallen completely in love. I sealed it away and returned to Melbourne to recuperate.

Once back home, it became evident that the experience had affected my mental health significantly, prompting the network to cover my therapy costs. Throughout this, Chris remained by my side.

A few months later, I shared the letter with him, and to my joy, he reciprocated my feelings. I hadn’t realized at the time, but those therapy sessions were invaluable, helping me become the best partner I could be for Chris.

During my time in the UK, I had envisioned finding my soulmate and settling down there permanently. Chris, however, had his own plans for his stay in Australia, which definitely did not include meeting his future husband within the first week!

While our individual adventures didn’t unfold as we had initially imagined, we serendipitously discovered exactly what we both wanted. We are now engaged and plan to move back to England together next year.
