Cornell University is set to evaluate the influence of fraternities and sororities on its campus following a public outcry regarding the institution’s response to a student’s allegations of rape, as stated by the university’s president.

The controversy stems from a civil lawsuit filed last month by a woman claiming she was drugged and assaulted in 2024 by multiple members of the Chi Phi fraternity. This incident has sparked significant concern and reflection about the campus culture at the Ithaca, New York institution.

In a video released on Saturday, President Michael Kotlikoff announced that the university would implement measures to prevent future occurrences of such incidents. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the roles that fraternities and sororities play in campus life.

“At their best, these organizations can foster friendships, a sense of belonging, mentorship, and a strong community spirit,” Kotlikoff remarked. “However, being part of a collective must never absolve individuals of their personal responsibilities.”

The university aims to gather feedback from students, alumni, and other stakeholders about how to maintain the positive aspects of Greek life while enhancing individual accountability, transparency, and a culture where every member is aware of their duty to ensure the safety and well-being of others.

The lawsuit names Cornell, several fraternity members, and others, alleging that the university did not take sufficient action against the accused students. The individuals implicated have denied any wrongdoing, according to reports from the New York Times.

Cornell has defended its response, asserting that it conducted a thorough investigation and has suspended the Chi Phi fraternity from campus activities. The university stated that it has enacted various disciplinary actions, including expulsions.

Despite this, Kotlikoff acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “We must do better. While we do not have all the answers, we are dedicated to investigating and uncovering the solutions our community requires.”

He committed to ensuring that university officials would be “more transparent” regarding their response to the 2024 incident, although he did not provide specific details about upcoming initiatives. “In the following weeks, we will offer more opportunities for our community members to pose questions and engage directly with university leadership,” he added.

This case has reignited discussions about how both law enforcement and educational institutions manage sexual assault allegations, with students questioning whether current processes adequately protect their interests. Additionally, it has garnered the attention of New York state authorities, who have appointed a special prosecutor to oversee the investigation.
