Supporters are expressing that the unfortunate incident in Newcastle, where ten individuals sustained injuries after a vehicle collided with fans, will only motivate the Knights to strive harder for the NRL championship.
Thousands of enthusiastic fans have gathered at Stadium Australia, proudly wearing their team’s colors of red, blue, and white, as they eagerly anticipate the showdown against the Sydney Roosters in the NRL grand final.
This year’s final marks a significant milestone for the Knights, as it is their first appearance in 25 years, following a disappointing last season where they finished at the bottom of the standings.
The day was further marked by the emotional aftermath of an incident at a roundabout on Newcastle Link Road in Wallsend, which affected supporters lining the route to send off their team to the stadium.
Currently, six individuals remain hospitalized, including a five-year-old girl who, along with another person, is in serious but stable condition.
Charlotte Barker and Mitchel Eastwood, who arrived in Sydney the previous day, shared their sadness upon learning about the event but expressed excitement about being at the grand final. Barker noted, “It was really hard to feel positive yesterday, but I think, yeah, it feels good today. There’s good vibes around.” She added that it was reassuring to hear the young girl was in a stable condition.
Eastwood expressed his optimism for a Knights victory, stating, “Hopefully the boys can get up for all those people… I’m sure they will.” This sentiment was echoed by a group of enthusiastic fans, who confidently predicted a commanding victory, emphasizing the emotional significance of the game.
A supporter named Trish voiced her determination not to let the actions of the alleged driver diminish the day’s joy. “Look at us all, we’re all here for the boys today,” she said, affirming that the team would be supporting the injured upon their return home. Trish, a lifelong Knights fan, expressed her pride in the team’s past achievements and her belief in another championship win.
A father attending with his two young sons described the situation as “devastating” but expressed relief that the injured were recovering. One of the boys shared his hope for a strong performance from the team, stating, “If we get the job done for them and make this city proud.”
Meanwhile, Roosters supporter Blake Allen, while confident in his team’s chances, acknowledged the resilience of Newcastle fans. He remarked, “Terrible incident… but you can see right now there’s five to one Newcastle fans, so I think they’re all gonna rally behind this.” He believed that the incident might inspire Newcastle to elevate their performance during the grand final.
Newcastle’s mayor, Gavin Morris, shared a message on social media, expressing the community’s grief for those affected by the incident while also rallying support for the Knights. He encouraged the team to give their best effort after navigating a challenging journey to Sydney.
