A casual conversation during a taxi ride in Bengaluru has captured widespread attention online after a passenger learned that the female driver, who operates a Rapido auto, had a background in the IT industry.
Tanvi, a digital content creator, took to Instagram to share her experience, where the driver discussed her transition from IT to auto driving, as well as the personal circumstances that influenced her decision.
The driver disclosed that she had recently lost her father while she was still employed in the IT sector, working night shifts that left her little time to spend with her mother. This situation ultimately led her to leave her IT position and pursue driving for Rapido.
Initially, her family did not support her choice. Nevertheless, she decided to embrace her new career, asserting that driving an auto is a respectable profession. She also mentioned that her earnings from driving now surpass her previous salary in the IT sector.
Passengers are often surprised by her educational and professional background. Reflecting on their reactions, she noted that people frequently question her decision, asking things like, “You speak good English and still drive an auto?”
This exchange sheds light on the societal perceptions tied to various occupations and the assumptions that can arise based on someone’s job title.
In her post, Tanvi opened with the phrase, “But what will people say?” She commended the woman for her pursuit of independence and for making a career change on her own terms.
“She chose not to care. She chose freedom. She chose independence. She chose to take charge of her own life,” Tanvi expressed.
Moreover, she highlighted that the driver is the only daughter working in a predominantly male industry, referring to her as “a Bangalore girl who decided that her life doesn’t need society’s permission.”
The video has gained significant traction, resonating with numerous social media users. One commentator remarked, “Very inspiring! Thanks for sharing. But Corporates need to hang their head in shame that one of their resources feels it is better to drive an auto than continue.”
Another user pointed out, “A job in an IT company doesn’t mean it is an IT job; she must have worked on the non-technical side. No software IT professional chooses a career as a driver over a six-figure salary.” A third user added, “People are returning to a simpler lifestyle where peace takes precedence over lifestyle.”
