Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep are known for their jovial banter as much as their impressive bowling skills. Their camaraderie is evident, especially when they are on the field together. However, when asked about their first encounter, both struggled to recall the details, having played alongside each other for such an extended period.
Mukesh, with a touch of humor, responded, “Forget when we first met. Just that whenever we did, we hugged one another.” Their partnership began nearly seven years ago during a senior domestic match on Christmas Day in 2019, where they collectively took five wickets against Andhra. Despite their efforts, Bengal had to settle for a draw, but their performance helped the team reach the final for the first time in 13 years, accumulating 67 wickets collectively, although the championship eluded them.
Fast forward to the Sher-I-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar, and the duo has finally claimed silverware. Mukesh’s outstanding figures of 6/33 and Akash’s 3/25 led the Rest of India to victory in the Irani Cup, defeating the reigning Ranji Trophy champions, Jammu & Kashmir, by 167 runs, marking their first title since 2024.
Akash, who is three years younger, nodded in agreement, highlighting their synergy. “Our experience against strong teams and top batsmen has been a significant advantage. We communicate effectively, which simplifies decision-making during tricky situations. Sometimes conditions favor batters, and our discussions make it easier to navigate those challenges,” he noted.
Their journeys reflect a shared background. Akash, originally from Sasaram in Bihar, moved to West Bengal in 2010 to stay with his uncle, while Mukesh relocated from Gopalganj a couple of years later to assist his father with their taxi business. Both faced parental disapproval regarding their cricket aspirations, yet they persevered to secure spots on the Bengal team and eventually the national squad.
The significance of this match extended beyond just winning a trophy. For Mukesh, who last represented India in July 2024, it was a chance to advocate for his comeback. For Akash, it was an opportunity to demonstrate his fitness to the selectors, two of whom were observing him closely from the sidelines as they prepare for the New Zealand series. This match marked his return after an eight-month hiatus due to a lower-back stress fracture.
Mukesh came into the match in excellent form, having topped the wicket-takers’ list in the Duleep Trophy with 12 wickets. “I’m relishing my bowling lately. My rhythm was good throughout the Duleep Trophy, and winning that trophy boosted my confidence. I didn’t take a break in between; I continued playing in the English County Championship and practiced consistently. That momentum has carried over into this match. Our focus now shifts to the upcoming Ranji Trophy, where we will prepare diligently to help our team succeed,” he stated.
For the Rest of India, the wait for a title lasted only two years, but the challenge ahead is considerably more daunting. Bengal has not clinched the Ranji Trophy since 1990. However, if Mukesh and Akash maintain their impressive form, their aspirations may be within reach.
