What was intended to be a brief escape during the Gandhi Jayanti extended weekend devolved into a frustrating experience for countless travelers, as a significant influx of visitors caused severe traffic jams in numerous favored hill stations.
Popular destinations such as Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital, and Rishikesh faced intense congestion as tourists flocked to these areas. Footage depicting gridlocked roads, overcrowded attractions, and overwhelmed thoroughfares quickly circulated on social media platforms.
In a widely shared update on X, ANI posted videos illustrating vehicles caught in extensive traffic as holidaymakers made their way to these sought-after locations. Long lines of cars extended along mountainous routes, resulting in travel times that significantly exceeded the usual hours.
The chaos was exacerbated by a lack of available accommodations. Reports indicated that hotels and other lodging options were fully booked, leaving many visitors in search of a place to stay. In several instances, travelers had no choice but to spend the night in their vehicles or on the roadside.
Footage from Manali in Himachal Pradesh highlighted the heavy traffic obstructing routes leading to Rohtang Pass, attributed to the overwhelming number of tourists.
A particularly striking video from Nainital captured travelers sleeping in their cars and on the streets amid the traffic, emphasizing the scale of the disruption caused by the holiday rush.
This congestion was not confined to Nainital alone. Another video showcased a large influx of visitors reaching a popular ghat in Rishikesh, while footage from Mussoorie illustrated a crowded Mall Road teeming with tourists.
The situation has reignited discussions surrounding crowd control and the adequacy of infrastructure in India’s well-known hill stations, especially during long weekends when visitor numbers can surge dramatically.
The viral clips have elicited a variety of responses, with one user reflecting, “This happened to us 17 years ago during the 15th August long weekend. My husband and I were on a bike and found a shabby hotel at the bus stand after a long journey. We learned our lesson—long weekends are best spent at home unless hotels are pre-booked.”
Another individual remarked, “RIP situational awareness and common sense.”
A third commenter questioned, “Why is enjoyment limited to weekends? Why not during weekdays? And why does enjoyment always imply alcohol or outings? Why can’t we spend quality time with family at home?”
