The Indian men’s hockey team achieved a remarkable victory over Malaysia, winning 5-1 in the final match of the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya on Saturday. This triumph marks the first time India has successfully defended its Asian title and secured the gold medal.
In addition to the gold medal, this win also guarantees India’s spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
This victory represents India’s fifth gold medal in men’s hockey at the Asian Games. The 2026 edition is particularly historic as it is the first instance where both the men’s and women’s teams from India have claimed gold medals in the same tournament. The women’s team previously defeated China, earning their first gold in 44 years, thus ending a lengthy pursuit of the title.
The men’s team, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Singh, had previously triumphed over their long-standing rivals, Pakistan, in a thrilling semifinal match that concluded with a score of 4-3. In the final against Malaysia, India took an early lead when Harmanpreet successfully converted a penalty corner in the first quarter; however, Malaysia responded swiftly, equalizing within three minutes.
India regained the advantage in the second quarter. A well-executed run by Shilanand Lakra led to another penalty corner. Following a crucial stop on the injection by Hardik, Jugraj took a shot that put India back in front.
India was awarded another penalty corner, which was executed as a variation. The ball was directed to a player positioned to the left of the goalkeeper, and after hitting a defender on the post, a penalty stroke was awarded. Hardik Singh confidently converted the stroke, extending India’s lead to 3-1 and strengthening their control over the match.
In the fourth quarter, Lakra further increased India’s lead, effectively extinguishing any hopes of a Malaysian comeback. Captain Harmanpreet added another goal through a drag flick, concluding the match at 5-1 in favor of India.
This victory marks India’s 21st gold medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya, elevating the nation to fourth place in the overall medal standings, surpassing Uzbekistan. The success of both teams in this edition of the games signifies a historic achievement for Indian hockey, with both squads returning home as champions for the first time simultaneously.
