On Saturday, KL Rahul achieved his ninth One Day International (ODI) century in just 80 deliveries during the third ODI match against the West Indies held in Mullanpur. Despite facing the challenge of losing partners throughout the innings, Rahul played a crucial role in stabilizing the Indian batting lineup. This marked his first opportunity to bat in the series, and he capitalized on it, helping India recover from a difficult start and build a formidable total.

Rahul reached his century with his third six of the innings, complementing it with nine boundaries. The wicketkeeper-batter unleashed a powerful performance towards the end, concluding his innings with an unbeaten score of 129 off 87 balls, marking a personal best in ODIs. His score stands as the third highest for an Indian player batting at number five, trailing only Yuvraj Singh’s 139 against Australia in 2004 and MS Dhoni’s 134 against England in 2017. Additionally, he surpassed 10,000 runs in international cricket during this innings, becoming the 15th Indian to achieve this milestone.

At 34 years old, Rahul has solidified his position as a key player in India’s middle order and a reliable performer in challenging situations. In the earlier ODIs of the series, while the top order excelled, both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply, with scores of one and zero, respectively. Rohit Sharma stepped up to lead India’s recovery alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, with the former captain scoring 92 runs off 85 balls and the latter contributing 57 runs. The duo forged a partnership of 137 runs off 132 balls, providing much-needed stability.

Rahul initially took his time to settle in but quickly accelerated his scoring, reaching his fifty in just 41 balls. He accelerated the run rate as India approached the tail-enders, with a notable 61-run partnership with Gurnoor Brar, who managed only eight runs in that stand. Ultimately, India posted a total of 351 for 7, showcasing a remarkable turnaround after a shaky start that saw them at 28 for 2 within the first ten overs.
